California’s wildfire victims have been abandoned for eight months by their own state officials.
Now they’ve found an unlikely champion who’s bringing serious firepower to their fight for answers.
And Rick Scott just joined forces with Spencer Pratt for one reason that has Gavin Newsom in damage control mode.
Former reality TV star gets Senate backup
The former reality TV villain from MTV’s The Hills lost everything when the Pacific Palisades fire destroyed his family’s home in January.
But instead of disappearing into Hollywood obscurity, Pratt transformed himself into one of the most relentless advocates for fire victims – and now he’s got serious political muscle backing his fight.¹
U.S. Senator Rick Scott flew out to California this week to tour the devastation with Pratt and see firsthand how California officials have left their own citizens hanging for eight months.
What Scott found shocked even a veteran of Florida’s hurricane disasters.
“I was shocked at how little has been done in the last seven months to help people rebuild,” Scott said after walking through the destroyed communities.²
The Florida Republican didn’t just offer empty sympathy – he immediately fired off an official letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi demanding federal action.
Scott’s Congressional oversight
The Palisades wildfire alone “burned over 23,000 acres, destroyed more than 6,800 homes and businesses, caused up to $54 billion in damage, and claimed 12 lives,” Scott wrote.³
But here’s what really gets your blood boiling – those 12 people who died? They were mostly senior citizens who didn’t have to die.
“These people shouldn’t have died,” Pratt told Variety. “The more of these meetings I take, the more I find out about how preventable this was. It’s actually criminal negligence.”⁴
Scott’s using his position on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee to demand answers from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives investigation.
The Senator wants a full briefing on “the causes and contributing factors of the California wildfires” and an update on findings that can be shared with victims who’ve been kept in the dark for months.⁵
Pratt captured the moment perfectly on Instagram, telling his followers: “I let him know the victims out in the Palisades are demanding a congressional investigation.”
Scott’s response? “I’m going to do my best to make sure it happens.”⁶
California officials suddenly have a much bigger problem
This partnership between Scott and Pratt just turned a local California disaster into a national congressional oversight issue.
And you can bet Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass are not happy about it.
Pratt’s been hammering both Democrats on social media for months, and now he’s got a U.S. Senator amplifying his message with the full weight of federal oversight authority.
“I’m literally their worst nightmare because I have nothing to lose, and all I’m ever going to do is just post actual facts,” Pratt explained.⁷
The reality TV star and his wife Heidi Montag have already sued the city of Los Angeles, blaming the municipal water department for the water issues that crippled firefighting efforts.⁸
But now Scott’s demanding federal accountability too.
Think about the political calculation here – Scott’s turning California’s disaster response failures into a national example of Democrat incompetence.
He’s positioning himself as the Senator who actually cares about disaster victims while highlighting how California Democrats abandoned their own constituents.
“By raising awareness and taking legal action, Mr. Pratt has been leading the fight for answers,” Scott wrote in his letter to Bondi. “As a member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, which oversees disaster relief, I aim to help him, his neighbors, and the Los Angeles community in that fight.”⁹
The timing couldn’t be better for Republicans either.
While California officials spent months offering excuses and bureaucratic delays, a Florida Republican Senator is the one actually fighting for California fire victims.
It’s a perfect example of America First Republicans delivering results while Democrats fail their own voters.
Scott’s already promised this is “just the start of our efforts to help the victims of this destruction get answers and get back on their feet.”¹⁰
Pratt thanked Scott on social media, writing: “The victims want answers. We’ve been waiting eight months now. Thank you Senator Rick Scott for taking the initiative, flying out here, seeing the devastation of the Palisades, and leading the charge into finding the answers we all need and want.”¹¹
Newsom and Bass better hope the federal investigation doesn’t uncover what Pratt suspects – that their incompetence killed people who should still be alive today.
Because now they’re not just dealing with an angry reality TV star.
They’ve got a U.S. Senator with subpoena power asking the hard questions they’ve been dodging for eight months.
