Pope Leo has appointed Bishop Jose Cepeda to be auxiliary bishop of San Antonio.
“It is a great joy,” Bishop Cepeda said at an Aug. 26 press conference in Washington, DC, regarding the appointment. “Thanks to God. And I want to give thanks to Pope Leo.”
Bishop Cepeda, who was born in Mexico, has served as auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese Detroit since his episcopal ordination in 2011. At the time, he was 41, making him the youngest bishop in the country. Before that, he served in both parishes and seminaries. He holds a doctorate in sacred theology from St. Thomas Aquinas Pontifical University in Rome, according to the Archdiocese of Detroit.
The new auxiliary bishop of San Antonio is a champion of Eucharistic adoration. In his remarks at this week’s press conference, he recalled that he was a boy when he first heard the Lord’s call to the priesthood while spending time before the Blessed Sacrament.
He said in a video for the National Eucharistic Revival that going to Eucharistic adoration always gave him joy and peace.
Bishop Cepeda has spoken on a number of occasions about the peace that comes from spending time with the Lord. Earlier this year, he told catechumens preparing to enter the Church to look to Christ’s time in the wilderness for guidance.
“The spirit of God was with Him in the desert,” Bishop Cepeda said, as CatholicVote previously reported.
The bishop is also known for his ministry to Hispanic Catholics, both in his own diocese and nationally, according to Detroit Catholic.
The Archbishop of San Antonio, Gustavo Garcia-Siller, has welcomed the news of the new auxiliary bishop.
“We are particularly glad to offer a heartfelt welcome home to Bishop Cepeda,” Archbishop Garcia-Siller said, according to Detroit Catholic. “San Antonio is where he grew up and first heard the Lord call him and nurture his priestly vocation.”
Bishop Cepeda has been central to evangelization efforts in his diocese. He served as director of the Archdiocese of Detroit’s Department of Evangelization and as director of catechesis and schools for the diocese.
“Having served the church in the upper Midwest and on numerous committees for the US bishops for the past 14 years,” Archbishop Garcia-Siller said, “Bishop Cepeda brings back to the Archdiocese of San Antonio valuable perspectives that will assist us in our evangelization efforts to spread the Gospel with missionary zeal.”
