Gloria Gaynor, the music icon best known for “I Will Survive,” has quietly contributed thousands of dollars to Republican candidates and political groups in recent years, records show.
The 81-year-old singer’s political donations have drawn attention as she prepares to accept a Kennedy Center Honor this December, an award presented under the Trump administration.
Records obtained by Meidas News show Gaynor contributed a total of $22,000 to Republican figures since 2023.
Her largest donation, $2,160.57, went to Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA), with smaller contributions including $356.15 to former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), $114.10 to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and $476.18 to Texas Sen. Ted Cruz.
These donations highlight her personal engagement in politics despite a typically private approach to her political views.
Gaynor’s connection to the LGBT community helped cement her status as a cultural icon.
Her 1978 hit “I Will Survive” quickly resonated with LGBT audiences, particularly those confronting discrimination and social stigma during the disco era.
The song’s message of resilience and empowerment became a staple at pride events, drag performances and community celebrations.
Over decades, Gaynor’s music continued to offer encouragement and hope, creating a lasting bond with LGBT fans worldwide.
The Kennedy Center recognition has drawn reactions from liberal commentators, including “The View” co-host Ana Navarro, who publicly urged Gaynor to reconsider accepting the honor.
Navarro emphasized the singer’s ties to the LGBT community and warned that accepting the award from a Trump-era administration could overshadow its cultural significance.
Despite the pressure, Gaynor has decided to accept the Kennedy Center Honor.
She issued a statement emphasizing her mission as an artist.
“My hope is that in accepting this honor, I can continue with the inspirational phenomenon that began with ‘I Will Survive,’” she said in a statement Wednesday, per the Daily Mail. “Sharing my music and art on a global level to provide encouragement, hope, empowerment, inspiration, understanding, and unity is the core of my purpose.”
Gaynor has generally maintained a politically neutral public image.
While her music has long resonated with LGBT audiences, she has not publicly aligned herself with progressive activism.
Earlier this year, she attracted attention after stating in a Metro interview that she does not see herself as a feminist, adding, “I love men.”
The current climate of cancel culture has added a layer of scrutiny for public figures like Gaynor.
Celebrities who express personal opinions or make political contributions often face immediate backlash from social media and activist groups.
Even neutral or subtle actions can be labeled controversial, prompting calls for boycotts or social penalties.
Gaynor’s situation highlights the tension between personal freedom and public expectation, as she balances her private political support with her ongoing role as a cultural icon.
President Trump, now overseeing the federally funded Kennedy Center, praised Gaynor ahead of the event.
“She is one of the most revered singers of the American disco era,” he said, calling “I Will Survive” an “unbelievable song” and highlighting its enduring popularity.
Other honorees for the 2025 Kennedy Center Awards include country legend George Strait, actor Sylvester Stallone, rock band Kiss and performer Michael Crawford.
Gaynor continues to perform and maintains a visible presence in film and television soundtracks, ensuring her cultural legacy remains strong.
