Fox News analyst and former Congressman Trey Gowdy (R-SC) has come under fire after making misleading statements about mass shootings during a discussion about the tragedy at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis.
The Wednesday morning attack left two children dead and 17 others injured when a 23-year-old trans-identifying individual, Robin Westman, opened fire during a school-wide mass before taking his own life behind the church.
During the broadcast, Gowdy called for stricter gun control measures, framing the problem as one that requires predicting shooters in advance.
“Our system is reactive. Something bad happens, we react to it. And what people are crying for now is how can we prevent this? How can we stop it? And the only way to stop it is to identify the shooter ahead of time or keep the weapons out of their hands,” he said, emphasizing intervention over constitutional rights.
Gowdy’s claim that mass shootings are “almost always” carried out by “young, white males” has drawn widespread criticism.
He stated, “I mean, did anyone this morning think, I wonder if that was a female? Did any of y’all think that? I mean, there’s been one school shooting involving a female. One at Tennessee. But other than that, it is usually young white males.”
Authorities report that Westman had no prior criminal record and was not previously known to law enforcement, highlighting the difficulty of predicting violent acts based on demographic assumptions, according to Trending Politics.
Analysts warn that oversimplifying shooter profiles undermines real solutions and misleads the public about school safety risks.
Gowdy’s remarks sparked a strong reaction from conservatives online.
“Trey Gowdy proves yet again that RINOs and Democrats are on the same team. Trey should never be trusted. Trey is all the way out of the uniparty cult closet,” one user commented.
Conservative commentator Mike Cernovich added, “Trey Gowdy has always been the scum of the earth. Now he’s pushing for gun control and anti-white rhetoric on Fox News. He lied about the ‘trans’ shooter. He was always the lowest of the low. Now you know!”
Another user wrote, “If you’re a white man, Fox News’ Trey Gowdy wants to take your guns because a mentally ill transgender shot up a gun-free zone. And they’re too afraid to talk about transgenderism on the air.”
Conservative commentator Gunther Eagleman concluded, “Trey Gowdy belongs on CNN.”
Experts argue that addressing mass shootings requires targeted, practical interventions rather than demographic assumptions.
Emphasis should be placed on mental health resources, early-warning systems, and community engagement, rather than politicized profiling or reactive gun control measures.
The Minneapolis Police Department continues its investigation into the shooting and is providing support for victims and families.
The tragedy has reignited conservative debates over school security, media responsibility and the limits of government intervention in protecting citizens’ rights.
This incident underscores the importance of defending constitutional freedoms while ensuring safety, rather than allowing politically motivated narratives to shape policy.
Conservatives warn that relying on oversimplified generalizations about shooters can lead to ineffective policies that erode individual liberties.
