California unveils plan to redraw voting areas to counter Texas Republicans, and Kelloggs agrees to remove toxic dyes from cereals.
California Announces Redistricting Plan
California Gov. Gavin Newsom has announced a plan to redraw the state’s voting lines in favor of Democrats in a countermove against a similar effort by the Republican governor in Texas, escalating the recent dispute between the two parties.
Newsom has called for a Nov. 4 election, which is likely to pass in the state where the Democratic Party dominates.
Over 50 Democratic lawmakers fled Texas in protest on Aug. 3, over a redistricting vote that would favor Republicans, leaving the state’s legislative body without a minimum number of required lawmakers and therefore unable to vote.
Governors in Democratic-controlled states like Illinois, California, and New York have suggested redistricting their states in retaliation.
California is the first and only so far to begin to do so.
US Immigration Enforcement Receives 100,000 Applications
U.S. Homeland Security has received over 100,000 applications to join U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), less than two weeks after making the announcement.
“Your country needs dedicated men and women of ICE to get the worst of the worst criminals out of our country,” DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said in a statement on Aug. 12.
On July 29, DHS launched a recruitment drive to recruit ICE officers to rid the United States of illegal immigrants who have entered the country in recent years, among whom are members of notorious gangs with violent backgrounds.
The “Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman” actor, Dean Cane, announced recently his plans to join the force.
Kellogg’s Agrees to Remove Toxic Dyes From Cereals
Cereal giant Kellogg’s has agreed to permanently remove toxic artificial dyes from all its cereals in a historic move for U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) agenda.
The agreement between WK Kellogg and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton follows months of investigations and negotiations.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) banned Red Dye No. 3 on Jan. 15 and further banned Citrus Red No. 2 and Orange B on April 22, with an aim at working with companies to voluntarily remove other dyes from their products.
MAHA was part of RFK Jr.’s slogan when he rallied with President Donald Trump during the presidential elections last year, with an agenda to address chronic health diseases in American children.
He has given companies until the end of 2026 to phase out “all petroleum-based synthetic dyes” from their foods.
DOJ Targets George Washington University Over Anti-Semitism
The U.S. Department of Justice has found George Washington University (GWU) in violation of civil rights by “acting deliberately indifferent” to the discrimination of Jewish, American-Israeli, and Israeli students and staff.
Universities have come under scrutiny in the past year over their apparent failure to address discrimination against Jewish and Israeli students and staff, amid nationwide protests over Israel’s response to the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas terrorist attack on Israel.
Four Ivy League universities have reached agreements with the federal government over the past month to address racial and sexual discrimination in exchange for restoring lost funding.
