A Florida man has died days after police say he was found screaming, locked in a bedroom, and doused in acid — an attack authorities allege was carried out by his wife.
The victim, identified as 54-year-old Robert Heyden by the Tampa Bay Times, was discovered inside a New Port Richey home on Thursday, Aug. 21, suffering from catastrophic chemical burns, according to the New Port Richey Police Department.
Officers were responding to a 911 call about a domestic disturbance when they arrived at the scene and heard Heyden screaming from inside a locked bedroom. According to an arrest affidavit, the door had been barricaded with a wooden bar and wire attached to the lock.
Police say Heyden’s wife, 46-year-old Chuanying He, was at the scene and later admitted to trying to kill him. Investigators believe the attack was deliberate.
Heyden was rushed to a Tampa-area hospital with severe injuries caused by a corrosive substance. Despite doctors’ efforts, he died early Sunday morning.
Court records show the couple had been married for just a year — tying the knot in August 2024 — but were in the middle of divorce proceedings at the time of the attack.
He has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder and aggravated battery resulting in serious bodily injury. She is currently being held without bond. It’s unclear if she has entered a plea or retained an attorney.
Authorities have described the case as “intentional in nature,” and the investigation remains ongoing.
