The University of Michigan announced Monday it is halting transgender hormone therapy and puberty blockers for minors after receiving a federal subpoena.
The university’s Michigan Medicine facility “will no longer provide gender affirming hormonal therapies and puberty blocker medications” to minors due to a federal investigation as well as “external threats and risks,” the school said in a statement. The school said it had “received a federal subpoena as part of a criminal and civil investigation into” such procedures.
Michigan Medicine declined to comment to the Daily Caller News Foundation about the subpoena. The Department of Justice (DOJ) did not respond to a request for comment.
Michigan Medicine previously received $482.8 million from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in fiscal year 2023, making the university’s medical school the 11th-ranked school in federal research funding at the time. As of March, Michigan Medicine had been providing transgender procedures for minors despite the Trump administration moving to defund them, the DCNF reported.
The university’s medical center also earned a top score on “LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality” from the left-wing activist group Human Rights Campaign in 2024, which grades institutions based on numerous criteria for being “inclusive.”
The Trump administration has ramped up pressure against medical facilities providing such procedures for minors, with the FBI reportedly investigating three hospitals in Massachusetts, Colorado and California in June over hormone replacement therapy and sex- change surgeries.
President Donald Trump’s Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) also published a review in May declaring that child sex-changes lack a scientific and ethical basis. “These interventions carry risk of significant harms including infertility/sterility, sexual dysfunction, impaired bone density accrual, adverse cognitive impacts, cardiovascular disease and metabolic disorders, psychiatric disorders, surgical complications, and regret,” the HHS found.
Michigan Medicine’s website lists plastic surgery, speech and language pathology and other services available for trans-identifying adults.
“We recognize the gravity and impact of this decision for our patients and our community,” the University of Michigan said Monday. “We are working closely with all those impacted, and we will continuously support the well-being of our patients, their families, and our teams.”
