President Donald Trump’s administration is mulling an idea to reclassify marijuana at the federal level as a less dangerous drug, Knewz.com can confirm. “We’re looking at reclassification and we’ll make a determination over the next — I would say over the next few weeks, and that determination hopefully will be the right one. It’s very complicated subject,” Trump told reporters during a recent news conference.
Great things, bad things

The president acknowledged he has mixed feelings about marijuana. “I’ve heard great things having to do with medical, and I’ve [heard] bad things having to do with just about everything else. But medical, and, you know, for pain and various things,” Trump told reporters, adding, “Some people like it, some people hate it.”
From Schedule I to Schedule III

Days before Trump floated the idea at the news conference, he hinted at a potential change while speaking to donors at a $1 million-a-plate fundraiser at his New Jersey golf club, The Wall Street Journal reported, confirming that rescheduling marijuana from a Schedule I drug to a Schedule III drug is on the table. Schedule I substances — which include marijuana, heroin and LSD — are considered to be “drugs with no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse.” Meanwhile, Schedule III drugs — which include testosterone, ketamine and anabolic steroids — are those considered to have “moderate to low potential for physical and psychological dependence.”
What Trump’s previously said about marijuana

Trump’s past comments about the drug include support for medical marijuana and a belief that it should be up to individual states, not the federal government, to regulate it. “In terms of marijuana and legalization, I think that should be a state issue, state-by-state. … Marijuana is such a big thing. I think medical should happen — right? … And then I really believe we should leave it up to the states,” he said during a 2015 political rally.
Not the first administration to debate it

The Drug Enforcement Administration revealed during the last year of former President Joe Biden’s White House tenure that it supported recommending the reclassification of marijuana, though the then-president never acted on it. A reclassification would permit additional research as well as offer tax benefits to the cannabis industry.
