President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he will allow 600,000 students from China to study in the United States, sparking outrage from conservatives.
The president made the statement during an Oval Office event alongside South Korean President Lee Jae Myung.
Trump said he plans to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping to continue what he described as a “very important relationship” between the United States and China.
The president had said back in June that Chinese students could attend American schools if they did not present a national security risk, Resist the Mainstream reported.
He repeated this condition Monday while addressing future U.S.-China education ties.
“I hear so many stories [about how] we’re not gonna allow their students. We’re gonna allow their students to come in. We’re gonna allow 600,00 students. It’s very important, but we’re gonna get along with China,” Trump said.
The agreement between Washington and Beijing to permit Chinese students to study in the U.S. was finalized in June.
The deal followed the Trump administration’s June 5 decision to suspend Harvard University’s ability to admit foreign nationals.
That suspension was linked to national security concerns and allegations of antisemitism on American college campuses.
Administration officials said at the time that universities would need to meet higher standards in admitting foreign students.
Trump’s Monday announcement clarifies the administration’s stance after months of speculation about whether Chinese students would be restricted.
The president emphasized that allowing students from China was part of a broader diplomatic effort.
Trump added that his administration holds significant leverage in its dealings with Beijing.
“We have much bigger and better cards than they do,” he said.
“They have some cards. We have incredible cards. But I don’t want to play those cards. If I did, that would destroy China,” Trump said.
He added that he was “not going to play those cards,” signaling that his administration preferred cooperation over confrontation.
Trump said that the U.S. and China would have a “great relationship” moving forward, despite disagreements over trade and national security.
He noted that strong ties with China were essential but reiterated that the U.S. would act firmly if necessary.
The Daily Caller reported that alongside the student exchange decision, Trump confirmed he is considering a trip to China.
Such a visit would include a meeting with Xi Jinping to continue negotiations on trade and economic relations.
Trade negotiations have been a central issue in U.S.-China relations.
Trump initially raised tariffs on China by 145 percent, a move that escalated economic tensions between the two countries.
After extended negotiations, the United States agreed to lower its tariffs to 30 percent.
In return, China agreed to impose a 10 percent duty on American imports. These revised terms were part of an effort to stabilize trade between the two largest economies in the world.
Conservatives, responding to Monday’s news, took to X to express their outrage.
“This IS NOT what I voted for. At all. WTF?” said one user.
Another wrote, “This is the final blow to the end of American glory. It was good till it lasted.”
A third quipped, “Why prioritize our rival’s students over American kids? Would they not take away American jobs? What benefits justify this?”
