A meeting with the nation’s top cop reportedly found Gotham’s police commissioner opposing assistance in fighting crime.
Measurable success in Washington, D.C., since President Donald Trump took temporary federal control of the Metropolitan Police Department has found the commander-in-chief looking to expand his initiative to other deep blue cities. Unfortunately for the victims — er, residents — officials like NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch continue to hold firm against tackling crime with every available resource.
Multiple news outlets confirmed that after U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi met behind closed doors Monday with Tisch at One Police Plaza, the commish insisted the help was unnecessary.
“NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch told US Attorney General Pam Bondi on Monday that the city’s police force has crime under control and doesn’t need the National Guard, law enforcement sources said,” the New York Post reported. “The pair met for about 30 minutes behind closed doors at One Police Plaza in Manhattan, with the tête-à-tête occurring as President Trump has taken a keen interest in boosting public safety in the city — including by potentially deploying additional boots on the ground in the five boroughs.”
In support of her position, Tisch contended that crime was at record lows with specific references to shootings and shooting victims being down to “all-time lows” thus far in 2025.
The commissioner’s stance followed a more overt stance against the president’s help in curbing rampant crime, as Chicago had been given priority over his hometown, where the murder rate was five times higher.
Responding to the potential of National Guard troops being deployed throughout the Windy City, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson (D) stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D) as he argued, “The addiction on jails and incarceration in this country — we have moved past that.”
“It is racist! It is immoral! It is unholy! And it is not the way to drive violence down!” said Johnson to applause from fellow Democrat officials.

Meanwhile, in addition to setting his sights on shows of force to curb crime in various metro areas, the president signed executive orders Monday targeting cashless bail, including one that gave Bondi 30 days to report with a list of jurisdictions that have “substantially eliminated cash bail as a potential condition of pretrial release from custody for crimes that pose a clear threat to public safety and order, including offenses involving violent, sexual, or indecent acts, or burglary, looting, or vandalism.”
Once recognized, the Director of the Office of Management and Budget would identify federal funds, grants, and contracts awarded to those jurisdictions to be considered for suspension or termination where applicable.
Speaking from the Oval Office during the signing, Trump said, “To me this is a very, very big deal … That was when the big crime in this country started … they kill people and they get out — we’re ending it.”

He also expressed, “It started in New York, and it’s been a horrible thing for crime,” as he indicated, “I think Chicago will be our next [stop], and then we’ll help with New York.”
As for the impact of the actions thus far in Washington, D.C., as the Big Apple sought to turn down assistance, Bondi touted another 87 arrests and seizure of four illegal firearms, bringing the respective totals to nearly 1,100 arrests and 115 guns since getting involved in policing the nation’s capital.
