What happened in Gainesville is not just a bad joke gone wrong. It’s a snapshot of what millions of conservative parents already know: public schools in blue-run districts have turned into ideological combat zones where students who dare to think differently are mocked, shamed, and punished.
A Florida teenager—an ROTC student who dreams of becoming a U.S. diplomat—was publicly branded “Most Likely to Become a Dictator” by his own history teacher, Lauren Watts, with the full participation of his classmates. His “crime”? Expressing conservative views and an interest in history.
The certificate wasn’t a prank among friends. It was created, handed out, and used as classroom theater by the adult entrusted with teaching civic responsibility. When the boy refused to go to the front of the room to accept the award, the humiliation was already complete. A teacher sanctioned it. A classroom of peers was encouraged to pile on.
His mother, Crystal Marull, told the Florida State Board of Education that this was part of a toxic school culture where conservative children are openly discriminated against. She held up the certificate for all to see: “Ms. Watts Class Superlatives 2023 – Most Likely to Become a Dictator.” A parody of education masquerading as history class.
This wasn’t an isolated incident, either. The same teacher allowed other students to smear the boy as a “Naziphile,” twisting his passion for history and ROTC into something sinister. A fellow student even spread falsehoods online, confusing “diplomat” with “dictator.” The mob weaponized it, and instead of stepping in, the teacher amplified it.
The boy himself had the most telling response: “If the difference between ‘diplomat’ and ‘dictator’ is not understood by high school, it reveals a deeper crisis in civic education and another sign of failure of Alachua’s public schools.”
He’s right. This isn’t just bullying—it’s proof of civic collapse in classrooms where teachers care more about ridiculing kids with the “wrong” views than about teaching actual history.
The fallout has begun. Watts has been placed on administrative leave pending investigation. But it’s not just one rogue teacher. Alachua County’s school leadership is openly hostile to conservatives. The board chair, Sarah Rockwell, once posted “one less MAGA in the world” after Hulk Hogan’s death. She later apologized, calling it a “flippant” remark. But parents aren’t buying it. Some are now calling for her resignation, and rightly so.
Meanwhile, Marull herself—a University of Florida faculty member—says she and her family have faced retaliation in other ways. Her six-year-old son was barred from sitting with his friend on the bus after she criticized sexually explicit books in schools.
