JACKSONVILLE, FL – A police shooting in Jacksonville is under review after nine officers fired on a suspect linked to a series of criminal acts. The incident unfolded when a couple, fishing at a local dock, heard gunfire and witnessed a man shooting into the water. When approached, the man allegedly aimed a gun at one of them and fired shots near his feet as he walked away.
The victim, noticing splinters from bullets hitting the pier, turned back, leading to a brief confrontation. The suspect pointed the rifle at the victim’s head, but the victim managed to disarm him. Both parties then parted ways, but the suspect’s actions were far from over.
As the couple tried to leave the area, the suspect, now in a truck, drove toward them aggressively, causing a collision. After this encounter, he continued to Mayport Road, where he collided with another vehicle uninvolved in the initial incident.
Police arrived at the crash site to find the man barricaded in his car. Negotiations lasted over an hour and a half. However, when the suspect reached for a rifle case, officers responded with gunfire, resulting in the suspect’s death. The 37-year-old man has not yet been publicly identified.
This marks the 14th officer-involved shooting in Jacksonville this year. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has taken over the investigation, examining the sequence of events that led to the fatal encounter.
