Christian lifestyle brand creators Chip and Joanna Gaines find themselves at the center of another controversy following the debut of their reality competition series “Roller Jam” on Magnolia Network.
The show, which premiered last year, features ten roller skating teams competing for a $150,000 prize in an elimination-style format.
The Gaineses serve as executive producers of the program, with Joanna also appearing as a judge in the series finale.
The competition has drawn significant attention from LGBTQ media outlets.
Gay culture magazine “Out” described the show as “the LGBTQ+ roller skating reality show we never knew we needed.”
Jordin Sparks hosts the competition series.
The singer, who has been described as a “strong Christian,” performed at the GMA Dove Awards last year alongside the band For King and Country.
Sparks has also demonstrated public support for LGBTQ causes.
She has participated in GLAAD’s #SpiritDay campaign supporting LGBTQ youth and has performed at pride events.
She has also worked with the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida.
The show’s judging panel includes Johnny Weir, a former Olympic figure skater who currently works as an LGBTQ activist.
Weir appears on the program wearing women’s dresses and clothing throughout much of the competition.
One of the featured teams on “Roller Jam” is Haus of Sk8, which identifies as an all-queer skating group.
Team member Laron Gigger spoke to Gaye Magazine about the group’s mission.
“Haus of Sk8 is not just about skating; it’s about breaking barriers, living authentically, and representing the LGBTQ+ community in a way that hasn’t been seen before,” Gigger stated.
Weir praised the team during the show, describing them as positive representation and role models for young LGBTQ viewers.
Despite the show’s content focus, Joanna Gaines has expressed enthusiasm for the project.
She described producing the series as “a dream come true for me” and promoted it as entertainment “the whole family can watch together,” per Protestia reporting.
The Gaineses first gained national recognition through their HGTV series “Fixer Upper,” which ran from 2013 to 2018.
The couple leveraged their television success to build a comprehensive lifestyle brand centered around their Magnolia brand.
The pair launched Magnolia Network in 2021, replacing the DIY Network.
The venture marked their transition from home renovation personalities to full-scale media entrepreneurs.
This latest controversy follows criticism the couple received last month over another Magnolia Network production.
Their reality show “Back to the Frontier” featured a gay couple who had adopted a child as one of three competing families.
The couple’s response to previous criticism has been limited.
Chip Gaines posted what observers described as passive-aggressive Bible verses on Twitter following the earlier controversy.
