Authorities in Ohio are investigating the tragic deaths of a man and his 4-year-old son after a disturbing incident at Atwood Lake, where the child’s mother allegedly drove her other three children into the water while on vacation.
The victims have been identified as 45-year-old Marcus J. Miller and his 4-year-old son, Vincen, both from Millersburg, Ohio, according to the Tuscarawas County coroner’s office.
On Saturday, Aug. 23, authorities responded to reports of a golf cart crash near the lake. When deputies spoke with the woman involved — who has not been publicly identified — and her three surviving children, they grew alarmed after she allegedly made “concerning statements about conversing with God,” the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
Investigators say the woman, who is Amish, appeared to have intentionally driven the golf cart carrying her 15-year-old daughter and 18-year-old twin sons into the lake. The teens managed to escape and are physically safe, according to police.
Following those troubling statements, authorities immediately launched a search for the family’s missing 4-year-old and his father. Later that same day, divers discovered young Vincen’s body off the edge of a dock. Marcus’s body was found the following day in the same area.
Investigators have not confirmed a motive, but Tuscarawas County Sheriff Orvis Campbell told WKYC that the mother may have been experiencing a “spiritual delusion” at the time of the incident. A witness reported that she allegedly claimed to have “given her son to the Lord.”
An autopsy is underway to determine the official cause and manner of death for both Marcus and Vincen. The woman is currently receiving treatment for mental health concerns, and authorities have not yet announced any charges.
This heartbreaking case has shaken the local Amish community as investigators continue working to piece together exactly what led to the tragedy.
