(NewsNation) — A Kentucky sheriff who allegedly fatally shot his county’s judge feared for his life, and that of his family, when arrested by his deputies, bodycam video shows.
Newly released video taken just moments after now-former Letcher County Sheriff Shawn “Mickey” Stines allegedly left Judge Kevin Mullins dead on the floor of his own chambers in 2024 shows Stine’s state of fear, suggesting to his deputies, “You’re gonna kill me.”
The bodycam footage came from a state trooper who says he’s known Stines his whole life.
Stines repeated “I don’t feel safe” to the arresting officers and one deputy told Stines not to worry and “I ain’t gonna let nothing happen to you.”
Former FBI Special Agent Bobby Chacon joined “Banfield” to discuss the footage and ultimately drew the conclusion that Stines “wasn’t seeking justice” when he allegedly shot the judge.
“It’s really tough to tell whether or not he’s genuinely disoriented and confused or he’s trying to play those at the scene into some kind of sympathy; he’s still acting like he’s in charge,” Chacon told NewsNation.
“He’s still acting like he’s making decisions. So it’s really … a bizarre, very unique situation for the officers involved.”
Chacon described it as a “very unusual circumstance” and despite the familiarities between those involved, Chacon would’ve been firmer amid Stines’ concerns they were going to murder him.
“I would have simply reminded him that, ‘No one’s doing any killing here, Mickey, except you, you’re a cold blooded murderer,'” Chacon said.
“You know, this is one of those rare situations where … there is no dispute of what happened. The only killing that was done here today is you killed somebody.”
Last week, NewsNation spoke to a woman who alleged Judge Mullins would demand sex to get offenders out of trouble.
Audio recordings were later found that could indicate a possible sex-for-favors scheme, not just in the courthouse but also among many people in the small town of Whitesburg.
