President Donald Trump on Sunday suggested a federal review of former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s (R) involvement in the “Bridgegate” scandal, following Christie’s appearance on ABC’s “This Week.”
The president criticized Christie’s handling of the controversy surrounding the 2013 lane closures on the George Washington Bridge, which had paralyzed traffic in Fort Lee for several days.
While two of Christie’s associates were convicted in the case, Christie himself has never faced charges.
Trump made the remarks on Truth Social, referring to the lane closures as politically motivated and framing a potential review as a matter of accountability.
He wrote, “Do you remember the way he lied about the dangerous and deadly closure of the George Washington Bridge in order to stay out of prison, at the same time sacrificing people who worked for him, including a young mother? Chris refused to take responsibility for these criminal acts.”
The 2013 lane closures were allegedly carried out in retaliation against Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich, a Democrat who declined to endorse Christie’s reelection, according to NJ.com.
The scandal, later dubbed Bridgegate, centered on Christie appointee David Wildstein, his deputy chief of staff Bridget Anne Kelly and Port Authority deputy executive director Bill Baroni.
Wildstein admitted to orchestrating the lane closures, acknowledging his role in executing the scheme, while Kelly and Baroni were convicted of wire fraud and conspiracy in 2016 for their participation in planning and carrying out the closures.
Wildstein pleaded guilty and cooperated with federal prosecutors, providing key testimony that contributed to their convictions.
In 2020, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the convictions of Kelly and Baroni in a unanimous decision, ruling that while their actions were deceptive, they did not meet the federal definition of fraud because no money or property was sought.
Christie has consistently denied any involvement in the lane closures.
Christie’s appearance on ABC focused on what he described as Trump’s politicization of federal law enforcement.
He criticized the president for allegedly treating the Justice Department as a personal legal instrument during the 2024 campaign and suggested that Trump’s approach undermines institutional checks and balances, The Western Journal reports.
During the interview, Christie also addressed statements from convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell regarding Trump’s connection to Jeffrey Epstein.
He dismissed her credibility, saying, “Ghislaine Maxwell recruited 15, 16-year-old girls to be sex slaves to Jeffrey Epstein. And she was convicted of that in federal court. Why should we believe a damn thing Ghislaine Maxwell has to say about anyone?”
Christie added that, in his experience, he did not believe Trump engaged in illegal activity with Epstein.
Trump responded by calling Christie “Sloppy Chris Christie” and reiterated, “NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW!”
The renewed attention has brought Bridgegate back into public discussion, highlighting long-standing political tensions between Trump and Christie.
While Christie remains a vocal critic, the president continues to advocate for accountability in past political controversies.
Observers note that federal authorities and political analysts may closely monitor any developments should Trump pursue additional review of the case.
