President Donald Trump’s administration has filed an emergency appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, seeking to overturn a lower court ruling that halted immigration enforcement operations in Southern California. The emergency petition follows a decision by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which refused to lift the temporary restraining order. The Supreme Court will now consider whether to intervene.
Federal judge blocks immigration stops

U.S. District Judge Maame E. Frimpong released the injunction last week. The order prevents federal agents from conducting certain immigration stops and arrests in the region. In her ruling, Frimpong cited a “mountain of evidence” indicating that the government’s enforcement tactics may violate Fourth Amendment protections against unreasonable searches and seizures.
Ninth Circuit upholds injunction

In its appeal to the Supreme Court, the Trump administration argued that the injunction restrains its ability to enforce immigration laws effectively. The Justice Department claimed that Frimpong’s order places significant limits on lawful federal activity, hindering agents from executing their duties. Despite the administration’s arguments, the 9th Circuit sided with the lower court.
Trump’s legal battles

The latest legal battle adds to a long list of challenges to the Trump administration’s policies. According to the Associated Press, more than 250 court cases have been filed during Trump’s presidency. Of those, 91 remain pending, 109 have been partially or fully blocked and 74 have been upheld.
DHS defends policy

The Trump administration has continued to defend its enforcement tactics. Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement to the AP, “Unelected judges are undermining the will of the American people. President Trump and Secretary Noem are putting the American people first by removing illegal aliens who pose a threat to our communities.”
