President Donald Trump on Monday questioned what he called South Korea’s “Purge or Revolution,” adding, “We can’t have that and do business there.”
Trump’s post on Truth Social comes the same day he is to meet with South Korean liberal President Lee Jae Myung for talks on trade and defense.
“WHAT IS GOING ON IN SOUTH KOREA? Seems like a Purge or Revolution. We can’t have that and do business there. I am seeing the new President today at the White House. Thank you for your attention to this matter!!!” Trump posted.
After winning the early presidential election in June, Lee approved legislation to launch special investigations into his conservative predecessor, former President Yoon Suk Yeol. Both Yoon and his wife have been arrested, NPR reported earlier this month. Yoon was impeached by lawmakers in December and formally removed from office by the Constitutional Court in April after declaring martial law at the end of last year.
Yoon’s martial law decree lasted only hours, after a quorum of lawmakers broke through a blockade of soldiers and voted to revoke the measure.
Following Trump’s post, Lee’s office said, “We will check the situation,” Maeil Business Newpaper reported.
