Federal officials confirmed Sunday that the Pentagon has developed plans to deploy National Guard troops to Chicago, marking the next phase of President Trump’s expanding military operations in Democratic-controlled cities across the nation.
A US official informed ABC News that military planners have prepared for the Chicago deployment after Trump indicated the city would follow Washington D.C. in receiving federal military intervention.
The announcement comes as Trump simultaneously threatens Baltimore with similar action.
Pentagon officials declined to provide specific details about the Chicago operation when contacted for comment.
A Department spokesperson stated they would not speculate on future deployments while confirming continuous planning efforts with agency partners.
“The Department is a planning organization and is continuously working with other agency partners on plans to protect federal assets and personnel,” the Pentagon representative told the Daily Mail.
“We won’t speculate on further operations.”
The White House referenced Trump’s previous statements about Chicago when asked about the deployment plans.
Trump had specifically targeted the city’s leadership during recent public remarks about expanding military operations.
“Chicago is a mess,” Trump said.
“You have an incompetent mayor — grossly incompetent. And we’ll straighten that one out probably next. That will be our next one after this, and it won’t even be tough.”
Maryland Governor Wes Moore extended an invitation to Trump for a Baltimore tour, prompting the President to suggest military deployment as an alternative response.
Moore had criticized Trump’s federal interventions in Washington D.C. while inviting dialogue about public safety concerns.
Trump responded to Moore’s invitation through a Truth Social post on Sunday, characterizing the governor’s tone as confrontational.
The President referenced his recent Los Angeles deployment, which occurred despite objections from California Governor Gavin Newsom.
“Wes Moore´s record on Crime is a very bad one, unless he fudges his figures on crime like many of the other ‘Blue States’ are doing,” Trump wrote.
“But if Wes Moore needs help, like Gavin Newscum did in L.A., I will send in the ‘troops,’ which is being done in nearby DC, and quickly clean up the Crime.”
Moore defended his invitation by stating Trump appeared to live in ignorance about Baltimore’s improving crime statistics.
The governor cited recent data showing significant reductions in violent crime across the city.
Baltimore recorded 200 homicides last year, representing a 24 percent decrease from the previous year and a 42 percent reduction since 2021, according to city data.
Overall violent crime dropped nearly 8 percent between 2023 and 2024, while property crimes fell 20 percent during the same period.
Governor Moore’s spokesperson criticized Trump’s approach to urban challenges, calling it representative of problematic political behavior.
“This is a President who would rather attack his country’s largest cities from behind a desk than walk the streets with the people he represents,” Moore’s spokesperson said, according to Daily Mail reporting.
“The President should join us in Baltimore because the blissful ignorance, tropes, and the 1980s scare tactics benefit no one.”
The exchange between Trump and Moore expanded beyond crime policy into questions about military service records.
Trump questioned Moore’s Bronze Star claim on Truth Social, while Moore responded by referencing Trump’s Vietnam War draft history.
Trump asked on Truth Social: “Did Wes Moore, the Governor of Maryland, lie about getting a Bronze Star?”
Moore had previously acknowledged an error in a White House fellowship application regarding military decorations from his Afghanistan service.
Moore responded by questioning Trump’s military service, asking on X: “Did Donald Trump, the President of the United States, lie about an injury to dodge the Vietnam draft?”
