Rapper Snoop Dogg drew controversy last week after criticizing LGBTQ+ representation in children’s films, singling out Pixar’s 2022 movie Lightyear during an appearance on the podcast It’s Giving with Sarah Fontenot.
Snoop explained that he took his grandson to see the film, which features a same-sex couple, but the experience left him uncomfortable when his grandson began asking questions about the relationship.
“Why my grandson in the middle of the movie like, ‘Papa Snoop, how she have a baby with a woman? She a woman,’” the rapper recalled. “Oh s—, I didn’t come in for this s—. I just came to watch the g—— movie… I don’t have an answer for that.”
The rapper went on to say the scene “threw him for a loop,” adding, “These are kids, they’re going to ask questions. I don’t have an answer. I was just there to go to sleep and watch the movie. That s— woke me up.”
The movie sparked debate even before its release, when Disney initially cut a same-sex kiss from the film but later restored it following pushback from staff and advocates. The moment drew backlash from conservative audiences, while progressives defended it as overdue representation.
Snoop’s remarks quickly circulated on social media, angering some progressives, especially as he remains scheduled to perform at the Australian Football League’s Grand Final. According to PinkNews, the AFL’s chief executive has so far defended keeping him on the lineup.
Lightyear, a spinoff of the Toy Story franchise, tells the story of the fictional space ranger that inspired the Buzz Lightyear toy. Actor Chris Evans, who voices the character, dismissed critics at the time, calling them “idiots” and urging audiences to “march forward, and embrace the growth that makes us human.”
