Famed Democratic strategist James Carville has issued a public mea culpa to first lady Melania Trump, Knewz.com can report. After receiving a legal letter from an attorney representing President Donald Trump’s wife concerning a YouTube clip from a recent episode of the Ragin’ Cajun’s podcast — the video was titled “James Carville: The Epstein Connection — Trump & Melania” — the author and pundit took down his comments and apologized for making them.
The apology

“After the episode, we received a letter from Melania Trump’s lawyer. He took issue with our title of one of those YouTube videos from that episode and a couple of comments I made about the first lady,” Carville, who successfully led former President Bill Clinton’s 1992 White House election campaign, said on his “Politics War Room” podcast. “We took a look at what they complained about, and we took down the video and edited out those comments from the episode. I also take back these statements and apologize,” he added.
Melania Trump responds

After Carville said he was sorry, the first lady took to social media to post an image showing a transcript of his apology plus a screenshot from the disputed podcast episode with a red “X” across it. “First lady Melania Trump’s attorneys are actively ensuring immediate retractions and apologies by those who spread malicious, defamatory falsehoods. The true account of how the first lady met President Trump is in her best-selling book, Melania,” a spokesperson for the first lady told The Hill.
The dispute

Reports reveal the first lady took issue with how Carville characterized the way she met her husband, falsely suggesting the president’s former friend, convicted predator and disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, was in some way connected. In her 2024 memoir, Melania, the first lady explained that she met her future spouse at a September 1998 Fashion Week party at New York City’s Kit Kat Klub. Donald sat next to Melania, who was working as a model at the time, and started a conversation. “I found myself drawn to his magnetic energy,” she wrote. They wed in 2005.
Not the first retraction

Carville’s apology came after news outlet The Daily Beast took down a story about Melania that contained what the New York Post characterized as “dubious” claims made by author Michael Wolff alleging that a modeling agent connected to financier Jeffrey Epstein had introduced the first lady to President Trump. An editor’s note that replaced that article’s text explained the move. “After this story was published, The Beast received a letter from first lady Melania Trump’s attorney challenging the headline and framing of the article. After reviewing the matter, the Beast has taken down the article and apologizes for any confusion or misunderstanding,” the note read.
