It seems that France does not take criticism very well when it comes to the antisemitism within their country.
The French government is shocked, SHOCKED, that United States Ambassador Charles Kushner is pointing out the obvious – France has a problem with antisemitism. Now, let us state the obvious – yes, the ambassador to France is the father of President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner. Yes, President Trump pardoned Charles Kushner at the end of his first term. Yes, Kushner got this ambassadorial job to France through nepotism. And yet, Kushner apparently took his job very seriously after his confirmation.
As the child of Holocaust survivors and representing the greatest country in the world, visiting the Memorial de la Shoah as my first stop in France was deeply personal. The memory of the Shoah demands vigilance.

So, while there can be plenty of criticism of Kushner for a myriad of reasons, the French government is now flipping out over a letter he wrote to President Emmanuel Macron. This letter was published in the Wall Street Journal as an op-ed, but also sent directly to Macron. The letter reads in full:
Dear President Macron,
On the 81st anniversary of the Allied Liberation of Paris, which ended the deportation of Jews from French soil, I write out of deep concern over the dramatic rise of antisemitism in France and the lack of sufficient action by your government to confront it.
Antisemitism has long scarred French life, but it has exploded since Hamas’s barbaric assault on Oct. 7, 2023. Since then, pro-Hamas extremists and radical activists have waged a campaign of intimidation and violence across Europe. In France, not a day passes without Jews assaulted in the street, synagogues or schools defaced, or Jewish-owned businesses vandalized. Your own Interior Ministry has reported antisemitic incidents even at preschools.
Public statements haranguing Israel and gestures toward recognition of a Palestinian state embolden extremists, fuel violence, and endanger Jewish life in France. In today’s world, anti-Zionism is antisemitism—plain and simple.
President Trump and I have Jewish children and share Jewish grandchildren. I know how he feels about antisemitism, as do all Americans. He directed the Education Department to enforce civil-rights protections for Jewish students on university campuses, making clear that harassment and discrimination won’t be tolerated. He expanded resources for the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Homeland Security to safeguard synagogues and Jewish schools. He ordered strict vetting to bar entry for foreigners espousing antisemitic hatred and revoked visas for foreign agitators. He oversaw the deportation of Hamas sympathizers and cut funding to organizations promoting antisemitic incitement. And by crippling Iran’s nuclear-weapons program, he struck directly at the world’s leading state sponsor of antisemitism and terror and saved millions of lives. These measures prove that antisemitism can be fought effectively when leaders have the will to act.
Today, many French Jews fear that history will repeat itself in Europe. Parents encourage their children to emigrate; surveys show most French citizens believe another Holocaust could happen in Europe. Nearly half of French youth report never having heard of the Holocaust at all. What are children being taught in French schools if such ignorance persists?
Mr. President, I urge you to act decisively: enforce hate-crime laws without exception; ensure the safety of Jewish schools, synagogues and businesses, prosecute offenders to the fullest extent; and abandon steps that give legitimacy to Hamas and its allies.
As U.S. ambassador to France, I stand ready to work with you and with leaders across French society to forge a serious plan that addresses the roots of antisemitism and defeats it.
This letter was obviously prompted by Macron’s announcement that France would be recognizing Palestine as a state this September (now bolstered by both the United Kingdom and Canada). This has frustrated Israel and allowed Hamas to claim that recognition as their own. That was probably not Macron’s intent, but Hamas knows they have control of Gaza, and current polls still demonstrate that Hamas remains popular within the West Bank/Judea and Samaria. There’s a reason the Palestinian Authority hasn’t held an election since 2005, and it’s because Mahmoud Abbas (who has been canceling elections since 2009) knows he would lose to Hamas. So Macron’s intent (which he claims is to allow the Palestinians the “right to self determination“) is useless – the reality is that given a vote, Hamas would be in control. Israel, for obvious reasons, finds that ludicrous and intolerable. Kushner is pointing out that France, in giving “legitimacy” to Hamas, is emboldening antisemitism within its own borders. And he is highlighting recent targeted vandalism against Jewish and Holocaust-related locations from the end of May this year – places that have nothing to do with Israel.
Authorities in Paris have launched an investigation after several Jewish sites across the capital were defaced with green paint.
The vandalism, discovered early Saturday morning, targeted the Shoah Memorial, two synagogues and a Jewish restaurant in the city’s historic Marais district, as well as a third synagogue in the 20th arrondissement (district). An open can of paint was reportedly found nearby, while French media said surveillance footage from the Holocaust Memorial showed an individual dressed in black spraying paint overnight.
Photos from the Shoah Memorial show paint coating a wall engraved with the names of the 76,000 Jewish men, women and children deported from France between 1942 and 1944.
Three Serbians who had lived in France “for years” were arrested days later. A report from Le Monde in June 2024 pointed to the rise of antisemitism in French schools, even at very young ages. French Jews are immigrating to Israel in larger numbers since October 7th. Other homes and synagogues have been vandalized. This is not opposition to Israel – this is antisemitism, plain and simple.
Apparently, France does not want their shortcomings pointed out to them. The Macron government is downright pearl-clutchingly OFFENDED that Kushner would DARE to point out their antisemitism. In fact, they are so offended that Kushner is being called on the proverbial carpet to explain himself.
France has summoned the U.S. ambassador to Paris after the diplomat, Charles Kushner, wrote a letter to French President Emmanuel Macron alleging the country did not do enough to combat antisemitism.
France’s foreign ministry issued a statement Sunday announcing it had summoned Kushner to appear Monday at Quai d’Orsay, the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, and that his allegations “are unacceptable.”
“France firmly rejects these allegations,” the statement obtained by CBS News said. “The rise in antisemitic acts in France since October 7, 2023, is a reality we deeply regret and against which the French authorities are fully mobilized, as such acts are intolerable.”
The French ministry also said Kushner’s allegations “run counter to international law,” citing the “obligation not to interfere in the internal affairs of states” in the 1961 Vienna Convention of Diplomatic Relations.
“They also fall short of the quality of the transatlantic partnership between France and the United States and of the trust that must prevail between allies,” the statement said.
The White House and U.S. State Department did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment. The summoning of the ambassador is a formal and public notice of displeasure.
Hilariously, several media outlets like CBS and the AP claim they don’t know what the letter said, while CNN says they saw a copy that the U.S. Embassy showed them. I guess we know who didn’t do some internet searches and read the entire letter in the Wall Street Journal! Oops!
France has plenty of Holocaust skeletons in their closet, but their excuse was always to blame someone else (the Nazis, the Vichy France government). This time, they can’t blame anyone else. If they blame the Muslim migrants that they have been allowing in for years, then that is still their fault (and they would never, EVER do that, thanks to “the soft bigotry of low expectations“). So they are going to yell at Charles Kushner for daring to ask them to fix a problem that he was never supposed to notice that they have, and claim that asking them to aggressively combat antisemitism is “interfering” with them.
In their official response, the French accused the Americans of violating international law by stating that Kushner’s letter constitutes interference in France’s internal affairs https://t.co/f4qE6H6Zdu

Stuff it, Macron. Methinks the Frenchman protests too much. Yelling at the American ambassador isn’t going to keep Jewish French citizens any safer, and neither does it give the impression that you take his – or your own citizens’ – concerns seriously. The French government can be as pissy as it wants to be, but the hard truth apparently hurts them right in their bleeding little cheese eating hearts.
