A heartbreaking twist has emerged in the case of missing 7-month-old Emmanuel Haro. What began as a frantic search for a kidnapped infant has now turned into a homicide investigation — and police say Emmanuel’s parents are to blame.
On Friday, Aug. 22, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department announced the arrest of Rebecca Haro, 32, and her husband, Jake Haro, in connection with their baby’s disappearance. Both were booked into a Riverside County jail on murder charges and are being held without bail.
Rebecca initially claimed Emmanuel was abducted outside a Big 5 Sporting Goods store in Yucaipa, California, on Thursday, Aug. 14. In interviews, she alleged she was attacked while changing her son’s diaper in the car, saying she heard someone say “hola” before being knocked unconscious. When she came to, she claimed Emmanuel was gone.
But investigators say the evidence tells a very different story. After conducting multiple interviews, executing search warrants, and analyzing digital and electronic data, detectives concluded there was no kidnapping.
“It is believed Emmanuel is deceased, and the search to recover his remains is ongoing,” the sheriff’s department said in a statement. “These arrests mark a significant development, but our focus remains on finding Emmanuel.”
Sheriff Shannon Dicus called the case “tragic” and promised justice for Emmanuel: “I trust our justice system will hold the parents accountable.”
As detectives dug deeper, troubling details about the family’s past came to light. Court records show that Jake Haro pleaded guilty to willful child cruelty in June 2023 after a 10-week-old girl suffered broken bones in October 2018. He was sentenced to 180 days in a sheriff’s work-release program, a suspended four-year prison term, and ordered to attend a child abuse treatment program.
Adding to the family’s troubles, Jake was also scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 2 for an unrelated charge of being a felon or addict in possession of a firearm.
Authorities are continuing the search for Emmanuel’s remains and urge anyone with information to contact the Homicide Detail at 909-890-4904. Anonymous tips can be submitted via We-Tip at 1-800-78-CRIME or online at wetip.com.
