There’s a reason why NBC is cutting MSNBC loose and forcing their highly mockable rebranding as “MS NOW,” and it is highlighted in Lawrence O’Donnell’s attempt to claim President Trump is old and tired.
Pointing out that President Trump is 79 years old could be an actual issue, except for three things that O’Donnell is really hoping everyone will forget about. First, Vice President Vance is 40 years old. Second, it is very clear that Donald Trump is in command within the White House. And third, we just saw Joe Biden act as a meat puppet for the last four years, and we have no idea who was actually president during that time. O’Donnell can speculate about President Trump and his health all he wants, but there is exactly zero doubt about who is in charge at the White House right now. But he’s still going to push that, as Rich Lowry pointed out in a New York Post op-ed.
The MSNBC anchor Lawrence O’Donnell believes he’s on to a scandal: The US president who held a snap summit with Vladimir Putin in Alaska, and then, immediately after, hosted a spontaneous meeting with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky and major European leaders at the White House, is so debilitated that he can barely function.
His evidence is that Donald Trump had a light public schedule a couple of days after this flurry of in-person, high-stakes diplomacy.
This would be little like a critic of Charles Lindbergh accusing the landmark aviator of being a layabout because, after landing in Paris upon the completion of his historic transatlantic flight, he didn’t do anything except sleep at the American ambassador’s residence.
According to O’Donnell, Trump’s absence might have been because he couldn’t stand up for very long or speak coherently.
As Lowry points out, this allegation runs into several obvious problems.
There’s the late-night social-media posts, the never-ending interactions with the media, the constant stream of incoming and outgoing phone calls, the attention to matters large (trade deals) and small (a new White House patio) and, above all, the ceaseless effort to impose his will on our domestic politics and, literally, the world.
Trump was the instigator of the high-stakes diplomacy with Putin and the Europeans, and displayed in his session with our allies a sense of personal command — making the Europeans play by his rules — that had many commentators comparing his counterparts to schoolchildren.
Anyone who thinks Trump is decrepit must believe the opposite of the famous “Saturday Night Live” skit that depicted President Ronald Reagan as an amiable dunce in public but a ruthless mastermind behind the scenes.
Trump, to the contrary, must be pretending to be a dynamo in public, while in private he retires to a rocking chair and dozes off while watching “The Price is Right.”
The irony is that the same people who looked away from, or lied about, Biden’s decline are desperate to insist Trump is in the same reduced state.
Meanwhile, Lawrence O’Donnell has become obsessed with President Trump’s… ankles. You would think he was a Regency-era mother checking the length of her daughter’s gown, or a modern day Muslim male in Afghanistan stuffing women in burqas and making sure they aren’t tempting men with indecent ankle exposure.
I would take O’Donnell maybe partly seriously if first, he wasn’t a total partisan hack with an unhealthy obsession with ankles, and second, he and the rest of MSNBC hadn’t completely ignored Joe Biden’s obvious cognitive and physical decline over the course of his entire term of office.

Will Lawrence O’Donnell be covering the testimony of former White House spokesman Ian Sams this week as breathlessly as he has covered Trump’s ankles?
Former White House spokesman Ian Sams spoke face-to-face with his boss, President Biden, on just two occasions during his more than two years in the administration, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) told reporters Thursday.
“This was a huge interview today, and I think it contradicts everything that the former Biden people are saying with respect to the president’s mental fitness,” argued Comer, describing Sams’ appearance as “one of the most shocking” sit-downs yet.
The two interactions, which the chairman described in a subsequent statement as “very limited,” were in addition to a virtual meeting Sams joined involving the 46th president and a phone call with Biden.
“In fact, [former special counsel] Robert Hur spent more time with Joe Biden than Ian Sams,” added Comer, in reference to the prosecutor’s two-day interview with the president while investigating whether Biden “willfully” kept national security documents.
Sams, who sat for a little more than three hours with committee staff and departed without answering reporter questions, had characterized the Hur report as “false” and including “inappropriate personal comments.”
Ah yes, the Hur interviews. It’s a timely reminder, considering the news from this week, how and why Joe Biden walked away from that.
Remember when they found classified documents at Joe Biden’s house but then the DOJ decided not to prosecute because they concluded he was too senile to form criminal intent?

But Trump taking a break after the diplomatic meetings is supposed to be a sign that he is getting too old for the job, guys. The media howled every time Joe Biden’s age came up, but now we’re supposed to believe that Trump is decaying before our eyes. I have two words for Lawrence O’Donnell, and they aren’t “Merry Christmas.”
If the left and the media (but I repeat myself) really want legitimate grounds to criticize Trump, then go after him for delaying the banning of TikTok (clearly illegal) or having the United States government buy 10% of Intel (highly problematic). Unless President Trump has an actual documented health issue that obviously affects his physical or cognitive state, this stupid obsession with ankles and age is nothing but the helpless gasp of a C-list talking head on a dying network demonstrating his own amnesia.
