A Milwaukee mother has been charged after police discovered the decomposing body of her 10-month-old daughter hidden inside a cardboard box in her apartment.
On August 13, authorities responded to a neighbor’s complaint about a “foul smell” coming from the home of 28-year-old Shyanna Brothers. At first, Brothers claimed the odor was from old food, according to WISN and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
When police entered the apartment, they found the body of Brothers’ baby, Rayne Taylor, locked inside a bedroom. The little girl’s remains were stuffed inside a large cardboard box surrounded by flies and maggots. According to a criminal complaint, Rayne’s body was in “an advanced state of decomposition.”
Brothers told investigators she was a victim of domestic violence and claimed that an unidentified man forced her to hide her daughter. “He has me hiding her in there,” she allegedly said, pointing to the bedroom where Rayne was found.
An autopsy revealed Rayne had a skull fracture consistent with blunt force trauma, though the official cause of death is still under investigation.
Police noted that Brothers’ statements were inconsistent and described her as incoherent at times, saying she appeared to be “talking to someone else.” A neighbor told local outlets they “never saw her with a baby” and that Brothers had previously complained about a bad smell in her home.
During a court appearance on August 17, Brothers’ defense attorney raised concerns about her mental health, prompting a judge to order a psychiatric evaluation. At this time, no other suspects are being questioned.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine how Rayne Taylor died.
