Lara Trump shared a candid look at her first meeting with President Donald Trump, recalling a surprising encounter that set the tone for her future with the president’s family.
The meeting took place in 2008 at the US Open in Flushing, Queens, the same year Lara began dating Eric Trump.
“My husband did not prepare me at all,” Lara, 42, told The Post. “It’s funny because you’ll hear from a lot of people the same experience I had, which is that he’s such an easy person to talk to.”
Lara described arriving at what she assumed were normal bleacher seats, only to be led into a suite where Donald and Melania Trump were holding court. Initially intimidated, she quickly found the encounter warm and personal.
“He wanted to know about me. The general small talk, where I’m from, where I went to school, what I was doing,” she said.
A North Carolina native, Lara had attended NC State and was working as a producer on “Inside Edition” at the time. “I was still kind of nervous and not sure if I was saying the right things.”
Donald broke the ice in a memorable, simple way: ice cream, per the New York Post.
“And then he looked at me and he said, ‘You know what? I’m going to get an ice cream. Do you like ice cream? Do you want an ice cream?’” Lara recalled. “And I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, Donald Trump eats ice cream.’ But as soon as he got an ice cream, I was like, ‘You know what? I can do this. This is going to be okay. This is a normal guy.’ I mean, as normal as you can imagine Donald Trump would be.”
Looking back, Lara said she appreciated the element of surprise.
“In some ways, I actually am happy I didn’t know because I didn’t have a second to think about it until it was right in front of me.” The experience left a lasting impression, shaping her connection with the Trump family and her later involvement in politics.
“I have to be very honest, without him, so much of what I’ve been able to do in my own life would not have been possible. And so I’m forever grateful for his support, his encouragement,” Lara said.
She went on to co-chair the Republican National Committee and hosts the Fox News show “My View with Lara Trump,” which offers viewers an inside look at Washington politics.
Six years after that first meeting, Lara married Eric at Mar-a-Lago in 2014.
The early encounter with Donald, she said, made it easy to campaign for him during his first presidential run in 2016.
“I think the fact that I had such an easy time interacting with him and he really was nothing but nice and warm to me from the very beginning, really did make me want to go out when he started running for president the first time and at least talk about the person that I knew,” she said.
Lara reflected on her personal connection with the president, emphasizing both respect and gratitude.
“I didn’t know a lot about the politics of everything at that time, but I knew the man and I knew who he was. You know, there really is only one Donald Trump. And to be able to call him my father-in-law is such an honor and just one of the greatest things I could have ever imagined,” she said.
