Minnesota Democrats moved to avert a potential political disaster by revoking their endorsement of socialist Omar Fateh to be the next mayor of Minneapolis, infuriating leftists, including the state’s most high-profile member of Congress.
Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) lashed out after the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (DFL) yanked its blessing of the Somali-American politician who secured it after a contentious vote at the party’s convention in July, drawing cries of protest from incumbent Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and his allies.
“After a thoughtful and transparent review of the challenges, the Constitution, Bylaws & Rules Committee found substantial failures in the Minneapolis Convention’s voting process on July 19th, including an acknowledgement that a mayoral candidate was errantly eliminated from contention. As a result, the Constitution, Bylaws & Rules Committee has vacated the mayoral endorsement,” DFL Party Chairman Richard Carlbom said in a statement.
The surprise move nearly levitated the hijab off of the “Squad” member’s head as she angrily reacted to the Frey-friendly party establishment’s intervention in the “democracy” that Democrats love pontificating about.
It is inexcusable to overturn the DFL endorsement from Omar Fateh.

Unacceptable. https://t.co/YGHHAKivw3

“It is inexcusable to overturn the DFL endorsement from Omar Fateh,” she wrote in a post to X. “A small group, a majority living outside Minneapolis, met privately to overturn the will of Minneapolis delegates who volunteered, organized, and participated in a months-long DFL process. Unacceptable.”
Fateh would likely have been a shoo-in to win the general election in November considering the midwestern city’s huge Somalian population, a scenario that would be problematic with the party heading into next year’s midterm elections with Republicans already licking their chops over Ugandan-born New York mayoral hopeful Zohran Mamdani and the potential to turn him into the Democratic Party’s national poster boy.
“I am incredibly honored to be the DFL endorsed candidate for Minneapolis Mayor. This endorsement is a message that Minneapolis residents are done with broken promises, vetoes, and politics as usual. It’s a mandate to build a city that works for all of us,” Fateh said after he landed the DFL endorsement, not suspecting that it would be clawed back a month later.

“Our campaign sees this for what it is: disenfranchisement of thousands of Minneapolis caucus-goers and the delegates who represented all of us on convention day. The establishment is threatened by our message. They are scared of a politics that really stands up to corporate interests and with our working class neighbors,” Fateh campaign manager Graham Faulkner said in a statement.
The bomb-throwing congresswoman also joined a group of Minneapolis DFL elected officials who condemned the decision to steal the endorsement from Fateh.
“We strongly condemn the DFL’s Constitution, Bylaws & Rules Committee’s (CBRC) decision to revoke the DFL endorsement from Omar Fateh. Last month, thousands of caucus-goers and delegates across Minneapolis gathered to participate in the Minneapolis DFL Convention. Now, a month later, a small group of DFL board members, a majority living outside Minneapolis, met privately to overturn the will of Minneapolis delegates who volunteered, organized, and participated in a months-long DFL process,” the statement read.
“It is inexcusable to overturn the results weeks after the convention because board members did not like the outcome. Not only does this decision set an extremely dangerous precedent, it will undermine the DFL endorsing process going forward and fails to center the will of delegates,” they said. “Right now, there is a clear tension between the progressive democrats who are challenging the status quo and moderate democrats. It is extremely disheartening that Omar Fateh, the first Black mayoral candidate to be DFL-endorsed in the last three decades, will have his endorsement revoked.”
The reversal clears the way for Frey, a man who famously sobbed over George Floyd’s golden casket at one of the fallen Democrat hero’s funerals in 2020.

“I won’t pretend that I’m not disappointed and angered to see 28 party insiders revoke the endorsement and overturn the votes of hundreds of Minneapolis residents. But losing this endorsement doesn’t mean we lose what it represents – a people ready for change. On to November,” Fateh said in a Friday post to X.
Omar has yet to formally endorse a candidate.
