The FBI conducted a high-profile raid on former National Security Adviser John Bolton’s Bethesda, Maryland, residence Friday morning, linked to allegations that he sent highly sensitive classified documents to his family using a private email server.
The raid, ordered by FBI Director Kash Patel, came amid renewed scrutiny of Bolton’s handling of national security information while serving in the Trump administration.
Bolton, who served as Trump’s national security adviser from April 2018 until September 2019, was home at the time of the raid, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The investigation reportedly focuses on documents Bolton allegedly sent from his work email to his wife and daughter, raising concerns about the unauthorized transmission of classified material.
Officials indicated that Bolton engaged in these actions just before he was fired in September 2019.
A senior U.S. official told the New York Post that Bolton “was literally stealing classified information, utilizing his family as a cutout” while he was still working in the White House, per the Daily Mail.
The probe into Bolton’s conduct was initially launched in 2020 but was reportedly paused during the Biden administration. Patel’s FBI has now revived the investigation.
FBI Director Kash Patel addressed the raid publicly on social media, posting on X: “NO ONE is above the law… @FBI agents on mission.”
The statement, posted in the early morning hours, coincided with the deployment of federal agents to Bolton’s home and his downtown Washington, D.C., office.
During the operation, more than a dozen agents were observed carrying boxes into and out of Bolton’s home.
Bolton himself returned to the residence nearly eight hours after the raid began, waving to the press but declining to answer questions.
His wife, Gretchen Smith Bolton, appeared visibly distressed as agents entered the home.
President Donald Trump weighed in on the Bolton raid, comparing it to the FBI’s 2022 search of his Mar-a-Lago property. “I purposely don’t want to really get involved in it. I’m not a fan of John Bolton,” Trump said, adding, “My house was raided also… So I know the feeling. It’s not a good feeling.”
The president has repeatedly criticized Bolton since his departure from the administration, calling him a “lowlife” and questioning his intelligence.
The raid drew attention from neighbors and protesters.
Some anti-Trump demonstrators gathered outside Bolton’s home, holding signs suggesting the FBI was acting as a political tool for the president.
One observer noted that while they disagreed with Bolton’s politics, they still supported his right to due process.
Bolton has long been a critic of Trump, frequently appearing on television to denounce the president’s national security and foreign policy decisions.
The renewed investigation highlights the ongoing tensions between Trump’s allies in federal law enforcement and officials who have publicly criticized him.
The controversy over Bolton’s alleged use of a private server draws parallels to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s well-known email controversy during her tenure as Secretary of State, which played a significant role in the 2016 presidential election.
Legal experts say the Bolton case could raise similar questions about classified information handling and potential security breaches within the federal government.
