LOS ANGELES, CA – A tense situation unfolded at the Westfield Topanga mall in Canoga Park, where a man armed with an AR-15 and carrying 200 rounds of ammunition was arrested for a shooting and stabbing incident. Authorities are relieved the event did not escalate into a mass shooting.
The suspect, Shane Stephan, an Army veteran with PTSD and schizophrenia, was apprehended after firing shots in the mall’s parking lot. Fortunately, no one was hit by the gunfire. The Los Angeles Police Department initially suspected the incident stemmed from a custody dispute but later determined it was a random act.
In an exclusive interview, Shane’s father revealed the family’s long-standing efforts to secure mental health support for his son. “We feared this day would come,” he said, expressing relief that the call they dreaded did not involve a fatal outcome.
Stephan now faces two counts of attempted murder. After the shooting, he allegedly stabbed a woman who was visiting the mall with her two-year-old daughter. The mother and child sought refuge in a nearby Cheesecake Factory, where patrons were dining. Thankfully, the toddler was unharmed, and the mother is expected to recover fully.
