Florida never disappoints when it comes to criminal masterminds.
But this latest genius might have just set a new record for stupidity.
And a Florida drug dealer handed police the perfect evidence and it backfired spectacularly.
Drug dealer’s high-tech scheme crashes and burns
Jason Brooks thought he was pretty clever using a drone to deliver drugs in Lutz, Florida.
The 49-year-old had loaded up his flying machine with bags of methamphetamine and fentanyl, even labeling them with names and the helpful instruction “share this.”¹
But around 1:30 AM Tuesday morning, his brilliant plan hit a snag – literally.
The drone crashed into a family’s backyard on Hannah Michaela Lane, complete with flashing lights to make sure everyone noticed.
Now here’s where things get truly unbelievable.
Instead of cutting his losses and running, Brooks decided to knock on the homeowner’s door.
In the middle of the night.
To ask for his drug-carrying drone back.
Security footage captured the whole thing – Brooks standing at the door, knocking repeatedly like he was picking up a lost frisbee.²
The homeowners found the crashed drone with its cloth bag containing four smaller bags of drugs.
Three contained fentanyl powder, one had methamphetamine.
They immediately called 911 and turned everything over to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
Brooks delivers himself to police
When deputies arrived, they found Brooks still there.
In the driveway.
Holding the drone’s remote control.
Body camera footage shows the conversation that followed, and you can’t make this stuff up.
“You know we can’t just be going in people’s backyards,” a deputy told Brooks.³
“I know. That’s why I knocked,” Brooks replied.
Think about that for a second – this criminal mastermind thought knocking on the door made his drug operation legal.
Deputies inspected the bags, including the one marked “share this” – apparently Brooks believed in spreading the wealth when it came to hardcore narcotics.

Brooks tried to play innocent, claiming he was just looking for his lost drone.
But when you show up at someone’s house at 1:30 AM with a remote control for a drone carrying fentanyl and meth, that story doesn’t exactly hold water.
Deputies arrested Brooks on the spot, charging him with possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell or deliver, along with several other charges including operating an unregistered vehicle.⁴
Turns out his car didn’t even have proper tags.
What drug dealers don’t understand about technology
Sheriff Chad Chronister praised the homeowners for their quick thinking in calling authorities.
“There’s no doubt he was trying to go undetected,” Chronister said.⁵
Yeah, nothing says “undetected” like crashing a drone with flashing lights into someone’s yard and then knocking on their door at 1:30 in the morning.
Here’s what makes this even more pathetic – Brooks thought using a drone would keep him off police radar.
Instead, he created the perfect evidence trail.
The drone contained the drugs.
Security cameras caught him at the scene.
He was literally holding the remote control when police arrived.
And the bags were labeled, making it easier for prosecutors to prove intent to distribute.
This is what happens when drug dealers watch too many spy movies and think they’re criminal masterminds.
Brooks would have been better off using carrier pigeons – at least birds know how to fly without crashing.
Now investigators are tracing the drone’s intended flight path to figure out where these drugs were supposed to go.
Given Brooks’ level of competence, they’ll probably find a trail of breadcrumbs leading right to his customers.
The real winners here are the homeowners who did exactly what they should have done – called the cops immediately and let them handle it.
And Brooks?
He’s learning that sometimes old-fashioned drug dealing is better than trying to be high-tech.
At least when you’re dealing drugs the traditional way, you don’t personally deliver yourself to the police holding the evidence.
