President Donald Trump is considering inserting himself into the New York City mayoral race in a bid to stop Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani from winning the election. According to reports, Trump privately discussed the race with former Governor Andrew Cuomo after Cuomo lost the Democratic primary to Mamdani. Despite his defeat, Cuomo later re-entered the race as an independent, intensifying the competition. Trump has denied speaking to Cuomo.

In addition to Cuomo, the race includes current Mayor Eric Adams, who is running independently, and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa. With multiple challengers in the field, some of Trump’s allies fear that a divided vote could clear the path for Mamdani to take City Hall. Sources told The New York Times that Trump sought advice from pollster Mark Penn, who previously worked with the Clintons, and Andrew Stein, a former New York City Council president. Both reportedly argued that Cuomo would be the strongest challenger to Mamdani.
Trump involves himself

During a White House meeting in July, Trump asked Representative Mike Lawler, a Republican from the New York suburbs, who might fare best against Mamdani in a one-on-one contest. Trump allegedly expressed skepticism about Sliwa’s chances while voicing admiration for both Adams and Cuomo. “It is not clear how Trump would involve himself were he to decide to try and intervene in the race,” the Times reported. But allies of Adams and Cuomo are hopeful that Trump could help unify support behind one anti-Mamdani candidate. Mamdani’s primary victory was driven by an agenda that included freezing rents, launching city-run supermarkets and making buses free. His campaign, powered largely by social media, has gained traction among voters disillusioned by rising living costs.
Trump and New York

Trump, who grew up in New York and still owns multiple businesses in the city, has been vocal in his criticism of Mamdani. “I’ll save New York City, and make it ‘hot’ and ‘great’ again, just like I did with the good ol’ USA!” Trump declared in July. He also said he would not “let this communist lunatic destroy New York,” insisting he holds “all the levers” and “all the cards.” Some Republicans see Mamdani as a convenient political foil for the 2026 midterms, but Trump has expressed deeper concern about the candidate’s progressive policies. His reported outreach to Cuomo occurred as the former governor was weighing whether to stay in the race.
Trump-Cuomo alliance

Cuomo spokesperson Rich Azzopardi claimed the two men “have not spoken in a while” and added, “As far as I know, they have not discussed the race.” Mamdani, however, condemned the possibility of a Trump-Cuomo alliance. “Andrew Cuomo has spent his career governing for the powerful and prioritizing his own self-interests over those of the people he was sworn to serve. This is not just a shady backroom deal by a cynical politician, it is disqualifying. It is a betrayal,” he said. “The job of New York City mayor is not to be [a] jester for a wannabe king, it is to protect the people of this city.”
