Guess what, folks: TikTok isn’t dead. In fact, it’s practically doing the tango at 1600 Pennsylvania. According to Just the News, the White House just launched an official TikTok account – posting a cheery 27-second Trump highlight reel – and racked up 1.3 million views in just 24 hours. As of the posting of this article, the account had racked up 273.7K followers.
While the president himself hasn’t commented on his new White House account, his Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement, “The Trump administration is committed to communicating the historic successes President Trump has delivered to the American people with as many audiences and platforms as possible.”
Meanwhile, federal employees are not allowed to download the app on work devices – with limited exceptions for law enforcement, national security and security research purposes according to NBC News.
The president had already set up his own account and used it during the 2024 campaign. It currently has 15.1 million followers.
But wait, you say. Isn’t TikTok a security threat? A national emergency? Sure, TikTok was supposed to be unplugged by now, but Trump has kicked the deadline down the road three times. This, despite the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act (PAFACA) requiring the sale of TikTok or a ban by January 19, 2025.
Chinese-owned ByteDance has about a month left to unload TikTok to an American buyer before the deadline slams shut (September 17) – unless of course Trump decides to kick the can down the road for a fourth time.
Meanwhile, TikTok isn’t exactly fading away. With an estimated 170 million U.S. users, the app is booming. One of Trump’s recent TikTok clips – where he declares, “I was the hunted – now I’m the hunter” – is proof enough that the president knows how to work the platform…and he apparently expects to continue to do so. If you were betting on TikTok’s demise, don’t cash in your chips just yet.
