BUFFALO, N.Y. (NewsNation, WIVB) — Several people died in a crash involving a bus on I-90 near Pembroke, New York, on Friday afternoon, according to New York State Police.
Police said at least one child is among the dead. Several other people are injured, while multiple others are trapped under and around the bus. Many people were ejected. Over 50 people were on the bus.
The crash occurred around 12:40 p.m. near Exit 48A eastbound. State police said the bus lost control, went into the median and turned over into a ditch on the side of the road. The bus did not hit any vehicles. Police said the driver of the bus is alive.
The New York State Thruway Authority said I-90 east and west is closed between Exit 48A and Exit 49 and asked drivers to seek alternate routes.
Several Mercy Flights were requested as well as all Mercy Flight ambulances.
Peter Cutler, the vice president of communications and internal affairs at Erie County Medical Center, said ECMC received a “mass casualty notification” and is expecting patients to be transported to its hospital command center. Cutler also said physicians are being sent to the crash site.
NewsNation local affiliate WIVB has heard reports of some noninjured people being taken to the Indian Falls Fire Station in East Pembroke. Kaleida Health said Oishei Children’s Hospital is receiving one patient.
WIVB spoke to a witness who said there were two cranes at the scene for the bus.
According to New York State Police, the bus was coming from Niagara Falls and was believed to be heading to New York City with over 50 passengers, including children.
Troopers said the bus was heading eastbound before the exit, and it lost control, went into the median, overcorrected and ended up in the ditch. Multiple people are dead, multiple trapped, and there are multiple injuries.
Police said most of the passengers did not have their seatbelts on, resulting in many ejections.
As of 1:30 p.m., drivers were being sent off the highway at Exit 48A.
