Democratic Socialist New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani’s inner circle is getting sketchier and more alarming by the day.
Previously, I wrote on George Soros’s connections to the communist darling of the Big Apple, but many more activists are surrounding him who spout not only communist talking points, but also anti-Israel hatred, as well as pro-illegal immigration policies. All the while, he employs the Democrat tactic of denying that any of that is going on.
Mamdani’s “brain trust”/Vera Institute for Justice
The New York Times is reporting that Mamdani’s “brain trust” includes New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC) President Murad Awawdeh, who is an activist for a group with a long history of seeking to end “state support for detention, deportation, and mass incarceration.”

Awawdeh is a communist to his very core and contends that all illegal immigrants have a right to taxpayer-funded healthcare. Communists believe that the government should essentially control everything, and that contention fits right in with its platform.

“SEEKING ASYLUM AT THE BORDER IS A LEGAL RIGHT,” Awawdeh posted on X in 2022. “ASYLUM SEEKERS ARE FLEEING FOR THEIR LIVES FROM VIOLENCE, PERSECUTION, & IMPACTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE. THE U.S. HAS A LEGAL OBLIGATION TO PROVIDE REFUGE.”

NYIC is closely tied to the Vera Institute for Justice. This progressive group received a boatload of money from the Biden administration in the form of contracts that sought to help illegal immigrants avoid deportation. No surprise – Vera has also taken $175,000 from George Soros’s network, which pretty much tells you everything you need to know about them.
The CEO of the Vera Institute is Damien Dwin. He strongly advocates for bail reform and against incarceration in general. Dwin has somehow managed to get offices in 40 states by throwing the race card concerning inmates.
He also rages against the misuse of jails, urging the transformation of prisons and pushing for taxpayer-funded legal services for illegal immigrants. These are concepts that Mamdani also supports while previously calling for the defunding of police. Now, he pretends to support the police for political reasons.
Vera donors include members of the NBA, Khalil Gibran Muhammed, who is an academic at Harvard and a Ford Foundation professor of history on race and public policy; the Tides Foundation; Bank of America; the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation; the California Endowment; Covington & Burling, LLP; the Ford Foundation; ‘Inspire the Change’ via the NFL Foundation; the Joyce Foundation; J.B. and M.K. Pritzker Family Foundation; Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (a government agency); Prudential Financial; MasterCard, and hundreds more.

More from Founders Code: “The Vera website includes work for ending girls’ incarceration, equitable housing access, redefining public safety, which actually is rebuilding policing to community-centered public safety ecosystems for social needs and an additional layer of the 911 call center system for mental health and even redefining what traffic stops are.”
The Vera Institute for Justice is a progressive behemoth that pushes social justice, which is a soft cover for communism, using race as a vehicle.

Surrounded by communists, Islamofascists, Jew-haters, and radicals
As noted before, Barack Obama’s shadow network and Soros are all-in on Mamdani:
Former President Obama reportedly called Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani after he won the New York City primary in June to congratulate him. He’s also having Patrick Gaspard, who was part of his campaign in 2008, coach Mamdani. In fact, Obama has done everything but formally endorse his fellow Marxist.
Gaspard has been in the thick of it politically. He also served as the Democratic National Committee’s executive director. He was a top executive for George Soros’s Open Society Foundations (OSF) between 2017 and 2020, and he was the president of American Progress (CAP) in 2021. Now, he’s advising the New York communist and working to unite Democrats behind him, starting with the introduction of Obama campaign architect David Axelrod, according to the New York Times.
Gaspard made millions from Soros’s network and is a faithful lapdog to the old spider.

Mamdani’s campaign relies heavily on marketing to young New Yorkers. He staunchly claims he’s not a communist, but his actions and policies definitely say otherwise. He’s also a Democratic Socialist, and his advisors are rife with them.

From Fox News – Cea Weaver is as communist as they come:
Housing advocate Cea Weaver, part of Mamdani’s reported “brain trust,” is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America and advises the mayoral hopeful on housing issues, including Mamdani’s plan to “freeze” the rent, which has gotten strong pushback from many New Yorkers in the industry.
Weaver is also the former coalitions director of Housing Justice for All, a group that counts dozens of radical far-left groups as coalition members, including the Communist Party of the United States of America and the New York Young Communist League.
“Elect more Communists,” Weaver posted on social media in 2017, the New York Post reported. “Seize private property,” Weaver posted in 2018.

Then there is Mamdani’s Israel problem. He keeps claiming he supports Jews, but he has a long history of anti-Israel statements and positions, as well as documented support for Palestinians. Those positions stretch back to when he wrote for his college newspaper. His inner circle of advisors contains a number of people who feel the same way.
One of those advisors, activist Faiza Ali, used to work for the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). It is a hate group that routinely threatens Jews and Israel. CAIR’s executive director, Nihad Awad, claimed after the horrific Hamas’ Oct. 7 attacks that he was happy to see Gazans “breaking the siege” against the “occupying power” of Israel. He now claims those comments were taken out of context… right.
The Trump administration is reportedly looking at labeling the Muslim Brotherhood and CAIR as terrorist organizations.
Ali is also evidently friends with rabid antisemite Linda Sarsour. They connected through the Muslim Democratic Club of New York.
From Fox News:
Sarsour, a prominent anti-Israel activist who has long been labeled antisemitic, has faced criticism for lauding Minister Louis Farrakhan, objecting to the Jewish right to return to Israel, and even calling for “jihad” against President Trump in 2017. She later claimed she was calling only for nonviolent dissent.

Mamdani Campaign Manager Maya Handa was formerly a top advisor to former Democratic Rep. Jamaal Bowman, another raging antisemite who was part of the infamous “Squad.” In 2024, he aggressively defended the phrase “from the river to the sea,” which is widely interpreted as a call for the elimination of Israel.
Senior Advisor Morris Katz, who is part of Mamdani’s inner circle and is laughably an “emissary” to the Jewish community to counteract skeptical pro-Israel voters, is also an antisemite.
From Fox News:
Katz has previously said the existential threat to Israel’s existence is “not the Palestinians who’re being oppressed and denied basic human rights” but rather Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Katz also amplified a quote from Mamdani saying that Democrats supporting a ceasefire and an arms embargo are “rightfully outraged over Israel’s killing of over 40,000 Palestinians.”

Mamdani says one thing, but what he intends to do when he’s elected mayor of New York City is nothing less than a melding of communism and Islamofascism. It’s a nightmare set to spread to other large blue cities across the nation if it isn’t stopped quickly.
