The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) carried out a court-authorized search of former U.S. National Security Advisor John Bolton’s Maryland home Friday morning, according to multiple reports. The search is part of a national security investigation into allegations that the former Trump administration official mishandled classified information.
FBI Director Kash Patel ordered the 7 a.m. ET raid of Bolton’s home, cryptically posting to X, “NO ONE is above the law … @FBI agents on mission.”
CNN reported that Bolton was unaware of the FBI search on Friday morning and intended to look into it further.
Bolton’s history with Trump Administration
Bolton previously served two Republican administrations. During George W. Bush’s administration, he served as an Ambassador for the United Nations. He then later served as Trump’s national security adviser for about a year and a half during Trump’s first term.
In 2019, Trump and Bolton parted ways. However, it was not an amicable transition. Trump stated that he fired Bolton, and Bolton claimed that he offered to resign after a disagreement.
Since his departure, the two have continued to disagree. Bolton has become a fierce critic of Trump, most recently posting about the war in Ukraine, saying peace talks will continue because “Trump wants a Nobel Peace Prize.”
That post came around the same time the FBI reportedly raided his home. It’s unclear if it was a scheduled post.
Bolton also later penned a memoir about his time with the Trump administration, accusing Trump of obstruction of justice.
Trump later responded, saying Bolton was in breach of an NDA that he signed as part of his employment, and accused him of sharing classified information.
