A Colorado funeral home is at the center of a horrifying investigation after authorities discovered numerous human bodies in various stages of decomposition — some believed to have been there for over a decade.
On Thursday, Aug. 21, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation confirmed that inspectors uncovered the remains during a routine inspection at Davis Mortuary in Pueblo the previous day. The discovery led to the immediate suspension of the mortuary’s license.
According to officials, the appointed designee for the funeral home, Brian Cotter, admitted that some of the bodies had been awaiting cremation for as long as 15 years. In an even more disturbing twist, Cotter allegedly confessed that he may have given grieving families fake cremains instead of their loved ones’ ashes.
Authorities said they found “around 20 or so” decomposing bodies hidden behind a door covered by a cardboard display after Cotter tried to prevent inspectors from entering the room. Investigators reported a “strong odor of decomposition” as soon as the area was opened.
“This is an extremely sensitive and complex situation,” officials stated during a press conference. “We are working to identify the victims and notify their families.”
The Pueblo County District Attorney’s Office said no formal charges have been filed yet but stressed that the investigation involves multiple agencies and will take time to ensure accuracy.
Adding to the grim findings, officials revealed that Cotter’s brother is believed to be a co-owner of Davis Mortuary. Meanwhile, in a separate but related report, the District Attorney’s Office confirmed the discovery of additional human remains on private property in Costilla County, though authorities have not yet linked the cases.
The investigation remains ongoing, and officials expect more unsettling details to emerge as they work to identify victims and uncover the truth behind the funeral home’s practices.
