The Department of Justice delivered the first batch of Jeffrey Epstein documents to the House Oversight Committee Friday.
The release comes in response to a subpoena issued by the panel seeking the full Epstein files.
Thousands of pages were handed over to the committee, according to a spokesperson for House GOP Oversight members.
The DOJ also included a transcript and audio of an interview with Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell.
Maxwell was questioned by Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche last month.
The interview followed public uproar over the DOJ and FBI’s initial decision not to release additional Epstein information, per The Hill.
In the interview, Maxwell said she “never saw” President Donald Trump “in any inappropriate setting.”
Maxwell is currently seeking a pardon or commutation of her sex trafficking conviction from Trump.
While the documents arrived days later than the committee’s original deadline, Oversight Republicans praised the disclosure.
“The Trump DOJ is providing records at a far quicker pace than anything the Biden DOJ ever provided,” the spokesperson said. “Former Attorney General Garland obstructed Chairman Comer’s subpoena for the audio of Special Counsel Hur’s interview with President Biden to hide his cognitive decline.”
Committee Chair James Comer told reporters the panel intends to make the records public after reviewing them to ensure any identification of victims or child sexual abuse material is redacted.
“The Committee will also consult with the DOJ to ensure any documents released do not negatively impact ongoing criminal cases and investigations,” Comer said.
“We’re going to work as quickly as we can. This is sensitive information. We want to make sure we don’t do anything that will harm or jeopardize any victims that were involved. But we’re going to be transparent,” Comer added.
Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA) criticized the plan to release files in batches.
“The American People will not accept anything short of the full, unredacted Epstein files,” Garcia said.
The Oversight Committee’s subpoena came after widespread outrage over an unsigned July DOJ and FBI memo saying no further Epstein information would be released.
Conservatives accused the government of shielding powerful individuals potentially involved in Epstein’s abuse of young women and underage girls.
Democrats attempted to link Trump to Epstein and accused the administration of covering up the files’ release.
The panel also subpoenaed several high-profile former officials to testify about Epstein, including former Attorney General Bill Barr, former President Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and several former attorneys general and FBI directors.
The first deposition, with Barr, took place Monday. Additional hearings are expected as the Oversight Committee continues its review.
The move marks a critical moment in the ongoing scrutiny of Epstein’s network and the federal response to his crimes.
