The Motor City is sputtering, but not because of auto sales this time. No, it’s because President Trump has done the unthinkable: he is actually enforcing immigration laws. Suddenly, small businesses that thrived on cheap, under-the-table labor and a steady flow of illegal alien customers are in meltdown mode.
Deprived of their steady stream of unlawful workers and bargain-hunting shoppers, business owners are moaning that their livelihoods are circling the drain, blaming Trump’s immigration crackdown for destroying their communities. Some illegal immigrants are being deported, while others are lying low, too afraid to step outside with ICE on patrol.
According to The Detroit News, restaurants, shops, and service companies are “reeling” because federal agents had the gall to ask people the most basic question: Are you even here legally? Shocking, I know. For years, these businesses probably felt untouchable under Democrat protection. But Trump 2.0 flipped that script.
And really – what was the point of the article? To stir up sympathy for business owners who built their model around serving and employing illegal aliens?
Meanwhile, activists are staging protests because Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) isn’t providing free spa treatments with every detention. Some even claim that requiring proper documentation to stay in the country amounts to cruelty. Of course, the same crowd that demands ID for happy hour discounts insists it’s fascism to require ID for citizenship status.
Lost in all this hand-wringing is the simple fact that immigration law has existed for decades. Trump didn’t invent it – he just decided it shouldn’t be optional. For years, Democratic politicians winked at the rules while businesses cashed in on cheap labor and provided services to illegal aliens. Now, with actual enforcement, a lot of that is grinding to a halt, as it should.
So, while activists shout “no justice, no peace,” the rest of the state, and America, is quietly asking: “How about just following the law?”
