Authorities in San Bernardino County, California, arrested the parents of a 7-month-old boy who was reported missing last week. Deputies said Jake and Rebecca Haro are in custody for murder in connection with the disappearance of their son, Emmanuel.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department announced Friday that investigators determined no kidnapping occurred. Authorities believe 7-month-old Emmanuel is deceased and are focusing on recovering his remains.
“The circumstances surrounding this investigation are tragic, and we will continue to search for Emmanuel,” Sheriff Shannon Dicus said.
Alleged kidnapping at Yucaipa store
On Aug. 14, Rebecca Haro told police and local media that her son was kidnapped outside a Big 5 Sporting Goods store in Yucaipa, California. She said she was changing his diaper in the parking lot when a man punched her, knocking her to the ground. When she regained consciousness, both the baby and the attacker were gone.
Deputies said they interviewed Rebecca Haro several times and found inconsistencies in her statements. They have not ruled out foul play thus far. Investigators said she later refused to continue speaking with them.
On Aug. 20, the sheriff’s office said Emmanuel’s father, Jake, had retained an attorney. That same day, officials also reported a fire near the Haro family home, though it was unclear if the incident was connected.
Searches and law enforcement actions
Two days earlier, authorities searched multiple locations for Emmanuel and executed a search warrant at the Haro home, bringing in K-9 units. A two-year-old living there was taken into Riverside County Child Protective Services for safety.
Jake Haro’s lawyer told CBS News that investigators dug in the backyard and cut into the ground while also taking the couple’s phones, passwords and vehicle for examination.
Earlier this week, Jake Haro’s ex-wife and the mom of his oldest child filed for a restraining order, asking to suspend his visitation after Emmanuel went missing and another child was removed from him and Rebecca Haro’s home.
Both parents were booked in a Riverside County jail without bail. Authorities say no other arrests have been made and no additional suspects are outstanding.
