President Donald Trump’s approval rating has edged higher among liberals, marking a rare uptick for the Republican leader. According to polling by I&I/TIPP, the share of liberals who said they approved of Trump’s job performance rose from 19 percent at the end of June to 23 percent in early August, a four-point increase. Though modest, the shift is significant given that liberals have generally viewed Trump and his policies unfavorably.
Trump’s popularity

Approval ratings serve as a snapshot of public sentiment, and Trump’s popularity has fluctuated throughout the first six-plus months of his second term. It remains unclear whether the latest movement will sustain itself and influence the 2026 midterm elections. Despite the gain, most liberals remain opposed to Trump. The August poll found that 72 percent of liberals still viewed him unfavorably. Even so, the proportion of liberals with a favorable view of the president increased from 18 percent in June to 23 percent in August — an uptick of five points.
The poll

Across the broader electorate, Trump’s overall favorability rating improved slightly. His net favorability was recorded at -1 percent in July and moved to 0 percent in August, essentially breaking even. The June I&I/TIPP poll was conducted between June 25 and 27 with a sample size of 1,421 adults. The August poll surveyed 1,362 adults from July 30 to August 1. Both carried a margin of error of plus or minus 2.7 percentage points.
Other surveys

Other surveys, however, paint a less favorable picture. A Quantus Insights poll conducted July 21–23 among 1,123 registered voters showed Trump with a 47 percent approval rating, compared to 50 percent disapproval. Similarly, YouGov polling for The Times indicated that disapproval of Trump’s job performance rose from 52 percent in April to 57 percent in July.
Trump’s challenges

Mark Shanahan, who teaches American politics at the University of Surrey in the U.K., described the challenges facing Trump as his presidency progresses. “Trump’s second term has been less of a honeymoon, but more of a divorce from half the country: one where he’s got to keep the house, the kids and just about all of the assets,” he explained. “From day one of his rule by Executive Order, he has never sought to bring the USA together and, indeed, has exploited differences to highlight how he’s delivering on his campaign commitments, not least through DOGE [the Department of Government Efficiency], through his clampdown on immigration and through his America First foreign policy. … Public services are already beginning to creak thanks to the actions of Musk and his cohort, and tariffs are driving up prices at home, while the economic benefits of the One Big, Beautiful Act have yet to be felt. And around all this, the whiff of Epstein is tainting the president’s achievements.”
