The Texas House approved controversial redistricting maps Wednesday that could deliver Republicans five additional congressional seats, prompting President Donald Trump to declare a major victory and outline an ambitious strategy to gain 100 seats nationwide.
The legislation passed on an 88-52 party-line vote after weeks of heated debate and dramatic resistance from Democratic lawmakers.
The new maps are expected to advance through the GOP-controlled state Senate and receive approval from Republican Gov. Greg Abbott.
Trump celebrated the passage on Truth Social, writing, “Big WIN for the Great State of Texas!!! Everything Passed, on our way to FIVE more Congressional seats and saving your Rights, your Freedoms, and your Country, itself. Texas never lets us down.”
The president outlined his broader national strategy, identifying additional states poised to follow Texas’s lead.
“Florida, Indiana, and others are looking to do the same thing. More seats equals less Crime, a great Economy, and a STRONG SECOND AMENDMENT. It means Happiness and Peace,” Trump posted.
Trump connected the redistricting effort to voting reforms, stating the next priority should be to “STOP MAIL-IN VOTING, a total fraud that has no bounds” and institute paper ballots.
“If we do these TWO things, we will pick up 100 more seats, and the CROOKED game of politics is over. God Bless America!!!” he declared.
Gov. Abbott praised the House action with language familiar to Trump supporters.
“Congrats to the Texas House on passing the One Big Beautiful Map,” Abbott wrote.
“It will make Texas, and Congress, a brighter shade of Red.”
Democratic lawmakers mounted fierce resistance to the redistricting plan through unprecedented tactics.
Resist the Mainstream reported that in early August, 57 lawmakers fled to Illinois and New York in an attempt to deny Republicans the quorum needed to advance the legislation.
The absence prompted state authorities to implement extraordinary measures.
State troopers were ordered to monitor Democrats continuously, even following them to school drop-offs, to ensure their presence for votes.
This surveillance gave the Texas House the minimum number of lawmakers required to proceed with legislation.
Rep. Nicole Collier of Fort Worth emerged as a prominent figure in the resistance effort.
She refused to sign paperwork authorizing Department of Public Safety monitoring and remained in the chamber for more than 30 hours, sleeping overnight on the floor.
Collier’s stand attracted supporters to the Capitol Tuesday evening, but the crowd was evacuated following a social media threat.
The Daily Mail highlighted that someone posted urging others to “go to the Capitol and shoot and kill those who will not allow lawmakers to leave,” according to local outlet KVUE.
Fox News reported that the Fort Worth representative faced an awkward moment Wednesday when she joined a conference call with California Governor Gavin Newsom and New Jersey Senator Cory Booker, only to leave abruptly after being informed she was committing a felony.
Vice President Kamala Harris contacted Collier to offer encouragement.
Collier shared on X that Harris told her: “You are among those that history will reveal was among the heroes of this moment, so you just stay strong.”
Collier has filed a lawsuit against Texas, alleging “illegal restraint by the government” for restrictions on her movement. “I refuse to comply with this unreasonable, un-American and unnecessary request,” Collier told CBS News.
State Rep. Todd Hunter, who authored the redistricting legislation, acknowledged the partisan nature of the effort.
“The underlying goal of this plan is straight forward: improve Republican political performance,” Hunter stated on the House floor, noting that the U.S. Supreme Court has permitted politicians to redraw districts for purely partisan reasons.
After nearly eight hours of debate, Hunter summarized the dispute succinctly: “What’s the difference, to the whole world listening? Republicans like it, and Democrats do not.”
Democratic lawmakers framed their opposition in broader democratic terms.
“In a democracy, people choose their representatives,” State Rep. Chris Turner said. “This bill flips that on its head and lets politicians in Washington, D.C., choose their voters.”
State Rep. John H. Bucy directly blamed the former president for the redistricting effort. “This is Donald Trump’s map,” Bucy said.
“It clearly and deliberately manufactures five more Republican seats in Congress because Trump himself knows that the voters are rejecting his agenda.”
