A Louisiana man has been indicted for allegedly stabbing his mother to death while she slept, shocking the tight-knit community where she was a beloved high school teacher.
According to the Caddo Parish District Attorney’s Office, 19-year-old Connor Lyons was indicted on Wednesday on a charge of second-degree murder in connection with the death of his 55-year-old mother, Lara Lyons. He was also indicted on charges of battery of a police officer and resisting arrest.
Authorities say the tragic case began with a chilling 911 call on May 23, when one of Connor’s siblings phoned dispatchers and said, “My brother killed my mother,” according to Shreveport CBS affiliate KSLA.
When deputies arrived at the family’s home on Double A Drive in Shreveport, they found Connor sitting on the back steps. Inside, they discovered Lara lying dead in her bed. Investigators say Connor later confessed to stabbing his mother three times in the neck as she slept, telling authorities he had been “hearing voices” at the time.
Connor has been held at the Caddo Correctional Center since his arrest and remains behind bars on a $2 million bond.
Following Lara’s death, the DeSoto Parish public school district released a statement honoring the longtime Mansfield High School teacher. “Ms. Lyons was a dedicated educator, a compassionate colleague, and a cherished member of the DeSoto Parish Schools family,” the district said. “Her commitment to her students and passion for teaching touched countless lives, and her absence will be deeply felt.”
