A small New Hampshire town is reeling after authorities confirmed that a mother shot and killed her husband and two of their three young children before taking her own life in a tragic murder-suicide.
Police say 34-year-old Emily Long fatally shot her husband, Ryan Long, 48, and their children Parker, 8, and Ryan, 6, inside their Madbury home on Monday, August 18. A third child, a toddler, was found inside the house unharmed.
Autopsy results released this week confirmed the heartbreaking details. According to officials, both children died from single gunshot wounds to the head, while Ryan Long — who had reportedly been battling brain cancer — was shot multiple times. His death, along with the children’s, was ruled a homicide. Emily Long died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, with her death ruled a suicide.
The New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office reported that the shootings likely occurred around 5:30 a.m. Investigators believe Emily used a handgun from inside the home before turning it on herself.
Assistant Attorney General Ben Agati told WMUR that determining a motive in a case like this is “very, very tricky.” While investigators are exploring whether financial struggles or Ryan’s health battle may have played a role, Agati warned against simplifying the tragedy. “Homicide and suicide is usually much, much more complex than just one reason,” he said.
Emily’s TikTok account has since surfaced, painting a haunting picture of her state of mind. In her bio, she described herself as a “Brain Cancer Wife” and called her page a “personal diary… cheaper than therapy.” In her final video, posted just one day before the shootings, she admitted she’d been struggling with depression. “I’m making a point to get out of my depression and do this for my family,” she said.
The investigation remains ongoing as the community mourns the devastating loss of four lives.
