A 32-year-old Wisconsin police officer has been arrested and charged after allegedly beating his 6-month-old son so severely that the infant suffered a brain bleed because he wouldn’t stop crying.
Authorities say Cameron Coronado, an officer with the Portage Police Department, was taken into custody this week and charged with child abuse with intent to cause bodily harm and disorderly conduct with a domestic abuse modifier, according to court records.
The criminal complaint, filed Monday in Sauk County, says the incident happened early Saturday morning, August 16, inside the family’s home. Coronado’s wife, whose name has not been released, told investigators she woke up around 3 a.m. to feed their baby and heard her husband in the kitchen with the crying infant.
She told detectives that she overheard Coronado yell, “Oh my God, shut the f— up,” before the baby’s crying suddenly changed. When she rushed into the kitchen, she claims she saw Coronado wiping blood from their son’s mouth.
Coronado allegedly admitted to forcefully shoving a pacifier into the baby’s mouth, causing a cut in the back of the infant’s throat. The baby briefly fell asleep but soon woke again, crying and struggling to swallow.
When the mother insisted they take the child to the hospital, Coronado allegedly “spiraled” and said he “knew what was going to happen” if they sought medical care. Doctors later found multiple injuries consistent with blunt force trauma, as well as bleeding in the baby’s brain.
The complaint also reveals troubling past behavior. Coronado’s wife said he had a “low frustration tolerance” with their children, often punching holes in the walls during outbursts. On July 9, she claims, he threatened to “kill these f—ing kids” if the baby didn’t stop crying.
Following Coronado’s arrest, Portage Police Chief Keith Klafke confirmed he was placed on paid administrative leave, emphasizing that “his actions are not a reflection of the great men and women of the Portage Police Department.”
Coronado appeared in court Wednesday, where his bond was set at $10,000 cash. A special prosecutor has been assigned to handle the case, and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for September 3.
