Controversial MAGA performer Sean Feucht is expecting to have news about where his Okanagan show will be by the end of the day.
His Aug. 23 concert at the West Kelowna amphitheatre was cancelled Tuesday, after the municipality denied permits— a decision Feucht described as purposeful “sabotage” of the event— before making other plans.
“We will update Kelowna location today,” Feucht said in a Twitter comment directed at a fan who’d been looking forward to the show.
“Working on it.”
Tara Armstrong, MLA for Kelowna Lake Country, took to her social media to help aid him in this endeavour.
“(The) Christian musician, is being blocked from performing in West Kelowna — not because of any real threat, but because his faith and political views happen to offend the wrong people,” Armstrong said.
“Now officials are scrambling to justify it with a flimsy excuse about public safety.”
She described it as a blatant attack on the freedoms in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
The Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms, which specializes in a libertarian approach to the Canadian Charter, said its lawyers will be looking into the West Kelowna cancellation following “a disturbing pattern of cities across Canada blocking access to performance venues” for Feucht.
West Kelowna-Peachland MLA Macklin McCall issued a statement through X on the topic, also. He did not respond to a request for an interview.
“I am disturbed by the City of West Kelowna’s last-minute decision to deny a permit,” McCall said.
“At face value it appears the city cancelled this concert based solely on the threat of protest. This suggests any individual can shut down a peaceful event just by threatening disruption.”
He said the message to the public is “worrying” and sets a “dangerous precedent where informed, principle-based decision making is surrendered to mob rule.”
He said he’s encouraged to hear the community is looking for an alternate location.
The City of West Kelowna said that the 2,000 concertgoers and 1,000 potential protesters in attendance at the municipally owned venue would create a safety issue. City staff indicated in a Wednesday press conference that an application of this kind had never been made before, and that’s why it took so long to reach a decision.
A representative from the City of West Kelowna said events on privately-owned land do not require a special event permit from the city, however all city bylaws would be applicable such as noise, parking, traffic, fireworks, etc. The B.C. Fire Code, B.C. Building Code, and the Fire Safety Act also apply.
Feucht rose to notoriety in recent months for his support of U.S. President Donald Trump and his Make America Great Again movement. He has led anti-LGBTQ protests in the U.S., publicly opposed abortion rights and called Pride Month “the month you discover which people, businesses, influencers, corporations & ministries have sold their soul to a demonic agenda seeking to destroy our culture and pervert our children.”
Feucht is meeting little resistance as he tours U.S. cities but has remarked in an online post earlier in the week that the pushback in Canada has been unprecedented.
