By Taxpayers Association of Oregon Foundation,
A man who bilked the state of Oregon of $1.8 million in carbon credits that he later sold to buy trucks and motorcycles pleaded guilty to charges of racketeering, tax evasion and first-degree theft. A Multnomah County Circuit Court judge sentenced Merlin Thompson, 55, of Tillamook to two years in prison and required him to pay full restitution of $50 a month because of his indigent state. At that rate, it will take him 36,000 months—3,000 years—to repay what’s owed. He is accused of scheming to set up three fake electric vehicle charging stations under his company, Thompson Technical Services, to apply for Oregon carbon credits, which he resold for $1.8 million.
