Elon Musk has reportedly paused his plans to launch the “America Party,” less than three months after announcing it, and is signaling potential support for Vice President JD Vance if he runs for president in 2028.
Citing people familiar with his plans, The Wall Street Journal reported Aug. 19 that Musk told associates he wants to focus on running his companies and avoid splitting Republican votes ahead of the next election.
In recent weeks, Musk has also kept close ties with Vance and has privately suggested he may financially back him in a future presidential run if Vance enters the race, according to the Journal.
Musk first unveiled the “America Party” July 5 on social media. He linked his plans for a third party to criticism of President Donald Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill,” arguing the bill’s spending levels were too high.
“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!” Musk wrote on X July 5. “When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”
Trump quickly shot down the idea, calling it “ridiculous” and noting that third parties “have never worked” in a July 6 Truth Social post, CatholicVote reported.
CNN data analyst Harry Enten echoed the warning. He predicted that a party built around Musk would likely draw only 4% of the electorate and said 58% of Americans view Musk unfavorably.
The dispute over Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” followed Musk’s May 30 exit from his post as chief of the White House Department of Government Efficiency. As CatholicVote reported June 5, the two traded social media barbs as Musk criticized certain parts of the bill.
However, the conflict appeared to end after Musk apologized to the President in a June 11 X post. On July 24, Trump wrote on Truth Social that he wants Musk’s companies to “THRIVE like never before.”
Musk’s allies told the Journal that for now, the “America Party” is on pause, but Musk may revisit the idea before the 2026 midterms.
