Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is under fire for claiming the city is free of crime despite rising public safety concerns.
Speaking at a news conference on Tuesday, Bass declared, “there is nothing — anything — in this city that has happened that comes even close to a crime, period.”
She made the remarks in response to allegations from the Trump administration that she and California Gov. Gavin Newsom are facilitating illegal immigration in ways that endanger public safety.
The city’s crime statistics suggest a contrasting reality.
Overall, Los Angeles reported approximately 3,115 crimes per 100,000 residents in 2024, a 29.7 percent increase from the previous year, according to Get Safe and Sound.
Critics argue that sanctuary policies, while designed to protect immigrant communities, may inadvertently limit law enforcement’s ability to coordinate with federal authorities to apprehend criminal illegal immigrants.
Federal law explicitly addresses harboring or concealing illegal immigrants.
Title 8, United States Code 1324, has prohibited such actions since 1952, imposing penalties of five to 10 years in prison, with harsher consequences if a person dies as a result.
Opponents of sanctuary measures contend that policies in California could be interpreted as conflicting with these statutes, creating potential legal and ethical concerns.
White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller has been one of Bass and Newsom’s most vocal critics.
In a Fox News interview, he claimed that sanctuary city policies have allowed criminal illegal immigrants to remain free, leading to assaults, armed robberies, home invasions, and even murders.
“All of that blood, all of that suffering, all of that heartache [falls] squarely on the soul and conscience of California’s governor and the mayor of Los Angeles,” Miller stated, per The Western Journal.
Miller also raised concerns that lax immigration enforcement facilitates human smuggling and sex trafficking.
“They think this is a game. They think this is a joke. This is life and death,” he said.
Bass’s assertion that no crimes are occurring in Los Angeles is further challenged by local reports.
While city law enforcement addresses a wide spectrum of criminal activity, sanctuary policies can limit federal cooperation in apprehending illegal immigrants who have committed serious offenses.
Advocates argue these measures protect immigrants from unjust deportation, but critics maintain that they create gaps that may endanger public safety.
Some analysts highlight programs like the Community Safety Partnership, which aims to strengthen relations between law enforcement and at-risk neighborhoods.
While such initiatives can provide support for immigrant communities, they also operate within a broader context of rising crime rates and ongoing political scrutiny.
The debate over sanctuary policies in California illustrates a broader national tension between federal immigration enforcement and state-level autonomy.
As Los Angeles continues to implement sanctuary measures and local leaders like Bass defend their policies, the issue remains a focal point of national debate over immigration, public safety and the responsibilities of elected officials.
Federal law provides clear standards, but interpretations and enforcement vary, leaving the matter subject to ongoing legal and political contention.
