President Donald Trump created a somewhat awkward moment during a live Fox & Friends interview Tuesday morning when he repeatedly praised the romantic relationship between host Ainsley Earhardt and Fox News star Sean Hannity.
The president called into the morning show from Washington, DC, where he was joined by hosts Earhardt, Lawrence B. Jones and Charles Hurt.
What began as a routine presidential interview quickly took an unexpected turn when Trump decided to highlight the couple’s five-year relationship.
Trump used his federal takeover of Washington, DC as a launching point for discussing the Fox News romance.
The president began by touting improvements to the nation’s capital since taking office.
“I’ve made Washington, DC, a- just an incredible place in four days,” Trump stated during the live broadcast.
He continued by describing how friends had told him about the bustling restaurant scene in the city.
The president then shifted his focus to the romantic couple, referencing Hannity’s ability to take his girlfriend to dinner in the revitalized capital.
Trump noted that Earhardt was sitting directly next to him during the interview, causing the host to smile, laugh and roll her eyes at the unexpected attention.
Trump appeared concerned about maintaining transparency regarding the relationship.
“I don’t want to get him in trouble, so we better explain exactly,” he said, adding jokingly, “We don’t want any secrets here.”
The president expressed genuine enthusiasm for the couple’s relationship.
“That is the greatest relationship,” Trump declared. “I hope I’m not breaking any news.”
Despite attempts by co-host Jones to redirect the conversation toward more serious topics, Trump remained focused on the romance.
When Jones tried to interject with “But Mr. President,” Trump spoke over him and insisted the relationship topic held significant importance.
“This could be the biggest – most important thing I’ve said,” Trump argued, clearly enjoying the discussion about his Fox News allies.
The president continued praising both individuals involved in the relationship.
“Those are two great – Ainsley and Sean – great people,” he stated, before expressing concerns about their safety while dining out in Washington.
Trump emphasized the couple’s newfound ability to enjoy the city without fear.
“Now they can go out, they can hold hands, they can walk down the street, they’re both superstars,” he declared.
The interview took another turn when Trump began speculating about the hosts’ respective salaries.
“I want to know who is making more money,” he said, generating more laughter from the hosts. “She has to be making a lot.”
Hannity serves as the network’s highest-paid star with an annual salary of $25 million, according to Forbes.
While Earhardt’s exact compensation remains undisclosed, industry sources suggest her salary reaches into the millions.
Jones made another attempt to steer the conversation back to substantive policy matters, specifically referencing Trump’s Monday conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and other European leaders at the White House.
The interview did eventually address the Ukraine situation, with Trump acknowledging that Ukraine would need to cede additional territory to Russia for any peace agreement.
“This is a war, and Russia is a powerful military nation, whether people like it or not,” Trump explained. “It’s a powerful nation. It’s a much bigger nation.”
Trump, however, could not resist returning to the Earhardt-Hannity relationship one final time as co-host Hurt attempted to conclude the interview.
When Hurt thanked the president for his time, Trump responded by hoping he had not caused trouble for Earhardt.
The president offered final praise for the couple before ending the call.
“Great couple, I will say it,” Trump declared.
“It’s a great couple. Have a good time everybody.”
