CHARLOTTE, NC – A tragic jet ski accident on Mountain Island Lake claimed the life of a 22-year-old woman, leaving her family searching for answers. The incident occurred over the weekend when Lana Gabriela was riding her jet ski and collided with another, according to wildlife officials.
Lana, who had recently launched her own business, LG Lashes, in Hickory, was remembered by her stepfather, Giovani Mebrano, as a vibrant young woman full of potential. “We still can’t believe she’s gone,” Mebrano said, standing near the lake where the accident happened.
The collision occurred when another jet ski reportedly crashed into Lana’s, causing her to fall into the water. A nearby boater managed to pull her out, but despite wearing a life jacket, she did not survive.
Khloe Smiley, who worked in the same building as Lana’s business, expressed her shock. “Her time was cut short. She had so much more to offer,” Smiley said, reflecting on the loss of her colleague.
The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is investigating the accident. Officers noted that Lana knew the individual on the other jet ski, and emphasized the importance of maintaining a safe distance of at least 100 feet between watercraft unless traveling side by side.
The family is eager for more information, questioning why Lana was left unconscious in the water for so long and why assistance wasn’t readily available. These unanswered questions have intensified their grief.
Wildlife officers explained that jet skis can be unpredictable, and sudden movements might not allow others enough time to react, potentially contributing to the accident.
As the investigation continues, more interviews are planned to piece together the events leading to the tragedy. The family hopes these efforts will eventually provide them with the clarity they desperately seek.
Lana’s loved ones are urging others to exercise caution on the water, hoping to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
